Today my husband and I with our two guide dogs had another near miss with an electric car. We were crossing a side road and it came in off the main road and passed very close in front of us. If it’d been a petrol or diesel engine, or if it’d had a sound emitter fitted, we’d have heard it, but, apart from the sound of the tyres on the road, it was virtually silent.

I am a confident guide dog handler but I can honestly say that silent electric vehicles scare me. I fear that it will take serious injury to a blind person, or even worse, death, before any meaningful legislation is put into place. If it happens to me or someone that I care about, I’ll be in court and I won’t rest until we have justice.

So please, if you drive an electric vehicle, switch on your sound emitter. After all, you wouldn’t drive at night without your lights on, it’s the same thing.

Many people will like this post but please don’t. I ask anyone who would have hit the like button to please hit the share button instead and pass this far and wide. I fear for our lives and those of these two amazing dogs.

Raw food contains all its original nutrients, but when high heat is applied for the extrusion of kibble, the molecular structure of proteins change, as well as the nutritional content of the food. Researchers decided to find out if adding fresh chicken meat to the mix would help.

I STILL NEEDED MY MOM - THE CONSEQUENCES OF TAKING PUPS TOO YOUNG
The early life experiences of pups are so vitally important and extend through to adulthood, influencing physical, emotional, mental and social development.
There are still so many “breeders” that allow pups to be taken away at 6 weeks. Uninformed people just accept this “tradition” without question and are often unprepared for the fall out this may cause. Just because a pup may no longer depend on mom for food, doesn’t mean they are ready to leave the security of their family unit and are ready to cope emotionally in a new home. A 6-week-old pup is still reliant on mom and littermates to learn appropriate play behaviour, impulse control, tolerance to frustration, bite inhibition, self-confidence and develop social skills that will help them become well-adjusted adults.
Scott and Fuller’s influential 1965 book about the social development of dogs recommended that 6 to 8 weeks was the best time to remove a pup from mom and littermates. The “ideal time” in this context was the best time for the human’s benefit and not the dogs (usually financial benefit). Thankfully, through science-based evidence, we have learnt so much about dog behaviour and development since then and our focus has changed to what is best for the dog, not the person. Research shows that waiting until a pup is at least 8 weeks is far less likely to result in any emotional trauma and resulting behavioural challenges.
We live in a broken world where having to care for or rescue pups much younger than 8 weeks is often unavoidable due to various circumstances. In these cases, we do the best we can for them. This post is not about this kind of situation, it’s about spreading knowledge, creating understanding and encouraging people not to support breeders that allow their pups to leave before at least 8 weeks.
