Selenium is an essential trace mineral that supports thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and a balanced immune response. In pets, it works closely with vitamin E to protect cells from oxidative stress and plays a key role in muscle, heart, and liver health.
Whole-food sources are the most bioavailable form of selenium. Pork kidney is one of the richest options, while sardines provide a balance of selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. Liver—whether chicken or beef—offers a moderate, highly usable source alongside important vitamins like A and B12.

Including these foods in rotation can help support your pet’s overall vitality and resilience from the inside out.

💩 Did you know your pet’s p**p is one of the best indicators of their overall health?

Changes in stool can reveal a lot about what’s happening inside the body — from gut health to inflammation, parasites, and even organ function.

Here’s what different stool types can mean:

✔️ Firm, brown, log-shaped → healthy digestion
✔️ Soft/mushy → food sensitivities, gut imbalance
✔️ Watery diarrhea → infection, parasites, toxins
✔️ Mucus coating → colitis, inflammation
✔️ Black/tarry → possible internal bleeding but normal if raw fed
✔️ Red streaks → colon/rectal irritation, parasites
✔️ Pale/gray → bile duct, pancreas, or liver concerns

A single abnormal p**p may not be cause for alarm, but ongoing changes are a sign it’s time to investigate. Always check with your veterinarian if you notice anything unusual.

Bravecto Quantum, recently approved by the FDA, is an injectable isoxazoline drug that provides year-long parasite protection with a single dose.

While convenient, this drug class has been associated with adverse neurological effects in some pets—including seizures, tremors, and ataxia. And because the injectable formulation remains in the body for a full year, there’s no way to reverse the effects if a reaction occurs.

Although it hasn’t yet been approved in Canada, it’s likely only a matter of time. As pet owners, it’s important to be informed about both the potential benefits and the risks.

There are safer, more flexible approaches to parasite prevention, including seasonal strategies, daily tick checks, and natural repellents. The best approach? One that’s tailored to your pet, your environment, and your comfort level.

💬 Would you consider a 12-month injectable for your dog? I’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Ultra-processed food is a term that was used to classify a category of foods consumed by humans but I can’t help but draw some distinct parallels to my own profession.

Would you categorize kibble as ultra-processed food for animals?

Vetradent products may help clean your pet’s teeth but at what cost?

Here is a list of the ingredients and known side effects:

Sodium citrate: at high doses can cause diarrhea, bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea and laxative effects

Citric acid: Synthetic citric acid is made from Aspergillus mold and may trigger issues in people sensitive to molds. Some potential side effects include: mouth and throat irritation, gastrointestinal upset, stomach pain and diarrhea, and rarely can cause allergic type reactions. Excessive consumption can cause tooth enamel erosion!!

Disodium EDTA: used a preservative but is also a metal chelator. If used in high doses or chronic low exposure, it can cause low calcium, muscle cramps and damage to the kidneys.

Potassium benzoate: preservative. Can convert to benzene (a carcinogenic substance) in high heat or acidic environments (like your pet’s gastrointestinal tract). Can cause nausea and irritation of the GI tract.

Zinc Chloride: an industrial chemical and dietary supplement at “appropriate doses”. In high concentrations or chronic low exposure, it can cause damage to the mouth, esophagus and stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

The Shocking Truth About Librela: New Study Released Today!

A new study published today revealed some concerning statistics about Librela (bedinvetmab), a monoclonal antibody treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs.

The study found that dogs receiving Librela were 9 times more likely to experience adverse effects compared to other osteoarthritis medications.

Even more alarming, Librela has accumulated 20 times more adverse event reports than Rimadyl, the highest-ranking comparator drug, and three times more than all comparator drugs combined over a 20-year period. This makes Librela’s safety profile significantly more questionable than originally thought.

Reported adverse events include lameness, cancer, neurological signs, and in some cases, death.

In my practice Librela is a last line drug that is considered only when we have exhausted all other options and we are considering end of life care.

Are you using Librela or other modalities to manage joint pain in your dog? Let me know what is working for you below.

Don’t forget to share this new information with your loved ones who may not be aware of the risks associated with this drug.

Why Titres Are So Important (Even If Rabies Is Mandatory)

Even though rabies is legally required, core vaccines like Distemper, Parvo, and Adenovirus (DAP) aren’t—and your pet might not need a booster at all.

Over vaccination is a serious issue leading to chronic inflammation and a whole host of health issues for our pets.

Many pet parents are simply not informed about the benefits of titre testing and all of the reasons why doing this simple blood test is valuable, even if you live in an area where rabies vaccines are mandatory.

🧪 Titre testing checks your pet’s actual immunity, helping you make informed choices without guessing or over-vaccinating.

Reasons why you should consider titre testing:
✔️ To limit the overall number of vaccines your pet is getting throughout their life
✔️ To make sure they are not a non-responder
✔️ If your pet has concurrent health issues that do not make them a good candidate for vaccination
✔️ If you know you aren’t going to revaccinate your pet

Our titre clinic on May 24th, allows pet parents to assess their dog’s immunity against distemper, parvo, adenovirus and rabies for $315+HST.

The standard laboratory charge for a distemper and parvo tire only is about $260+HST. This means you are effectively getting the rabies and adenovirus titres for FREE!

Feel free to DM me or if you are interested in participating. Only a few more spots left for this clinic!

Supplements can enhance your pet’s health, but they can’t replace the foundation of a high-quality diet. Just like with humans, a poor diet can’t be fixed by adding supplements alone. ⁣

The nutrients in whole foods are vital for your pet’s overall well-being, providing the essential building blocks for strong immunity, healthy digestion, and vibrant energy. ⁣

Start with a nutrient-dense, balanced diet, and then consider supplements as a way to fill in the gaps or address specific health needs. ⁣

Prioritize what goes in the bowl first—true wellness begins there! ⁣

It’s not a secret that as pet parents we want our fur kids to live forever 🐶❤️🐱
⁣⁣⁣
Here are 5 things I focus on when it comes to helping my patients and my own pets thrive. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣1. Nutrition 🥩 - if I had to pick one pillar to be the most important and influential, this is it here. Nutrition and diet can make or break your pet’s health. As a holistic veterinarian, I recommend balanced, species appropriate fresh food diets. I do not recommend highly processed diets, such as kibble or canned food. If you currently find yourself in a situation where a fresh food diet is not financially possible, that’s ok! Top your pet’s kibble with dark leafy greens, and any of your cooked, lean and unseasoned meats. Every little bit counts!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
2. Microbiome 🦠 - the microbiome is the diverse population of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and yeast that inhabit your pet’s gastrointestinal tract. If you know me, you know that I am a little bit obsessed with your pet’s microbiome. Why? Because the microbiome is responsible for your pet’s gut health, immune system function, mitigating systemic diseases and balancing their mental health!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
3. Reduce Toxin Exposure ☣️- unfortunately toxins can be found all over in today’s world. From our water, to herbicides on our foods, pesticides on the lawns and even the medications our pets consume, we need to do our best to try and reduce exposure as much as possible. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
4. Movement 🏃🏻‍♂️- exercise is crucial for our pets. Beyond physical movement itself, exercise allows our pets to be mentally stimulated and also promotes lymphatic movement and drainage which is key in toxin removal. ⁣⁣⁣

5. Mental Stimulation 🧠- keep that brain working! Whether you are teaching your pet tricks, or focusing on their breed specific needs, keeping their brain active throughout their entire life plays a large part in overall health and longevity.

These are my 5 pillars of optimal pet health - did I miss anything you think is important? What do you do to ensure optimal health with your pets? Share with me in the comments 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Milky Oat Tops are easily one of my favourite herbs to use in day to day preparations not just for my dogs but for myself as well. ⁣

⁣🌿Oat tops are known as nervines, meaning they are beneficial in supporting your pet’s nervous system. Nervines go deep and help replenish the nervous system from the inside out. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🌿Turn to this herb if your pet has been overstimulated and needs to relax and balance their nervous system. Using oat tops will allow also your pet to be better equipped at adapting to daily stressors. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🌿The oat tops can been turned into a tincture or they can be made into an infusion (tea) and mixed into your dog or cat’s food daily.⁣

🌿⁣Oats are also a nutritional powerhouse and can be used to help boost your pet’s daily intake of minerals. Nutrients like silica, chromium, calcium, magnesium and zinc are found in abundance in this wonderful plant. ⁣

🌿There are no known contraindications to using oat tops (other than an oat allergy) and can be easily incorporated into your pet’s herbal pantry. ⁣
