PLACED WITH AMSTERDOG ANIMAL RESCUE
Poor Sam. She was said to be very loyal, as dogs are, yet her owner dumped her! She has a harsh allegation against her, and we don't know her side of the story. And if you read her notes, she is crate trained but doesn't need it anymore. Yet supposedly she broke out of her crate. Supposedly she had an incident with her sister, yet Sam has multiple bite wounds on her. So it's not like she's the only one at fault! What happened here? Sam's owner said that this is the first time she's ever reacted like this! Yet she was described as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, attention seeking and confident. She is shy and then becomes friendly to adults, while playing gently. Plus she's underweight. It's not been easy for her, and the ACC isn't making it any easier! Sam has allowed handling, but she's subdued and will need a slow approach. She even allowed gentle petting on her head. She even rested her head on the handler's hand! She's begun to warm up to familiar handlers. Sam needs an angel! She's only 2 years old, and got the short end of the stick! The ACC would love nothing more than to kill her, so please put an end to their evil plans and save her!

For a New Family to Know: Sam is a friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, confident, and independent dog with a high to very high activity level. Sam's owner reports she is very loyal and loves to run and play fetch. When you're home, Sam will follow you around and be in the same room as you. Sam likes to play with balls, stuffed toys, squeaky toys, bones/chew toys, and frisbees. Sam likes to play fetch, chase, tug, guarding, wrestling, and alerting/barking games. Sam has been kept mostly indoors and sleeps in a bed in her crate. Sam eats both wet and dry pedigree dog food two times per day. Her favorite treat is human food. Sam is housetrained and will usually go potty on grass, newspaper, and wee-wee/training pads. When left alone in the house, Sam is well behaved. Sam is never left alone in the yard. Sam has been crate trained but doesn't need it now. Sam knows the commands sit, come, down, stay, and "right here." Sam is used to slow walks on leash, off-leash walks, off-leash dog parks, running/jogging, and playing in the yard for exercise. Sam pulls lightly or doesn't pull on the leash. When off leash, Sam stays close by your side or wanders some but comes when called.
Upon intake, Sam was slightly tense sitting in the lobby with her owner. She had a tucked tail and her ears were flat against her head. She tensed up when I approached with a scanner, but with a slow approach I was able to scan; mc negative. Would sniff treats that I threw on the ground but did not eat any. Likes squeaky toys. Allowed me to leash with ease. Maintained a crouched, tense body and tucked tail as she walked with me to intakes. Did not collar due to influx of intakes.
ASSSESSMENT NOTES
Date of assessment:: 5/16/2023
Summary:: Due to fearfulness and bite history, Sam is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment.
Summary:: Sam should be the only resident dog in a future home due t bite history.
Summary (3):: 5/14/23: Sam is at the front of the kennel and is easily leashed and taken out to the yard where she explores her surroundings. Handler sits on the bench and calls her over and she approaches and rests her head on handler's palm. She allows gentle petting on the top of her head and is then returned to kennel without issue.
5/12/23: Sam is at the front and easily removed from kennel. She is easily startled and will turn quickly in the direction of noise. When out in the yard, she softens slightly allow for her tail to hand instead of tucked. She explores her surroundings, including handlers legs and remains near handler. She returns to kennel without issue.
5/9/23: Sam is laying on her bed in the back of the kennel. She remains in place when handler opens the kennel door. she allows handler to place the leash on her. Once on, she comes out readily. She walks with tense low body, hypervigilant of her surroundings. She will walk a few feet then stop and look around. She is clipped and returned to kennel.
5/6/23: Sam is laying in her kennel when handler approaches. She remains their, head low, tense body. Leash is presented and Sam sniffs the leash but does not get up and come forward. She has no interest in treats of toys/squeaker. When handler attempts to drape the leash on Sam, she stiffens and side-eyes the leash but allows the two leashes (for safety) to be placed on her. She comes out of kennel when pressure is placed on the leash but then panics, flailing side to side with hackles raised when walking past the barking dogs. Once out of the room, she remains tense and will walk a few feet then stop and look back at handlers. Handlers coax her forward and she walks then stops. This is repeated a few times until we get into a pen. She pees without squatting and tail is till tucked. The same process is repeated to get her back into the kennel. Clipping the leash is not attempted and the hook is used to retrieve them.
Date of intake:: 5/5/2023
Summary:: Tense
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats, Single-pet home, Recommend no dog parks, Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN: Due to fearfulness and bite history, an adult-only home his recommended.
NO CATS, NO DOGS: Due to bite history and reports of aggression toward animals, Sam should be the only resident pet.
We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: :
Fearful,
Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,
Bite history (human),
Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments::
FEARFUL: In the care center, Sam is fearful, timid, and often tentative to approach new people or places. She is described as a shy dog by the former owner. See handout on Decompression.
BITE HISTORY: Sam has previously bitten the other dog in the home and has also bitten a human in the midst of a dog-dog altercation. See handout on Bite History. Sam should be the only resident dog in a future home to prevent future incidents.
Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response.
Pre-Screener Form
Sam is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. She is a fearful dog who has previously gotten into scuffles and has bitten the other resident dog, also accidentally biting a human who intervened. Sam has begun to warm up to the staff who work with her frequently. Medically, she has healing bite wounds.
Here's what my friends at ACC say:
Sam came to ACC from a previous home. She is described as a shy dog who does not do well around other animals, and had previously bitten the other dog in the home, as well as a family member who intervened (bite to the foot., requiring stitches).
In the care center Sam is highly fearful but with time and slow approach has slowly begun to warm up to the handler who work with her frequently. Sam would succeed best outside of a shelter environment and should be placed in an experienced residence with no other animals. Sam should be placed under the guidance of an ACC rescue partner.
