Northern Gundogs Braque Francais - CKC Reg. Northern Gundogs is providing North American's with amazing hunting companions from right here in Canada.

After looking for our girl a few years ago we saw there was a demand for this breed in North America but more importantly in Canada.

Red is always locked and ready to go to work. Hes been a breeze to train and honestly I cant take much credit. gets most of the credit for producing such an amazing hard working, driven dog. I'm excited to breed him into our line next years.

I consider myself a pretty creative person. I like to cook, I write a little, I draw a little, but she is one of my greatest creations. No, I didn't put pencil or pen to paper but I did pick up the phone, made the calls and put in a ton of leg work to produce beautiful Bri. Art is very much thinking outside of the box. Breeding is very much about staying in the box with a little artistic license. We've only been doing this a short while but I can already start to see traits being amplified and others muted from just one generation. Such a cool thing to make such a beautiful creature.

(P.S. I like my kids too...😆)

These two are doing quite well at 4 weeks. I can't wait to see them running big on the prairies.

This last week did not go the way we expected. We did everything right, our girl Zo did everything right, everything was going smoothly, we even kept our expectations low so as to not get too excited about a bigger litter. To our surprise, the puppy count xray made us very optimistic with 6 puppies. We really started to look forward to the days to come when Zo would whelp this relatively good size litter. Things were looking up.
The day came and went for her delivery date but not unusually long after Zo started active labour. After far too long we still didn't see a pup so I decided to head into the vet. The tech had the first one on the ground after only a few minutes and he was a monster! He was blocking the canal for the other but at the end we had 4 healthy puppies and 1 still born. We were happy with that.
Within 24 hrs we knew something was off with our girl. She wasn't eating or drinking and was generally off. Shortly after the nightmare started. We lost the first puppy after a long night of tube feeding. The next day another started to fade and no amount of intervention could get him back. Our vet even put him on antibiotics just in case but it was too late. I immediately started giving the other two pups the antibiotics. Enough was enough so we headed to emerg with Zoe and the two remaining pups. The attending vet did some scans and found an abnormal amount of inflammation in her uterus. Both pups seemed to be doing okay at the time but still not wanting to feed off certain ni***es and taking a long time to feed.
The next day we headed into the repro vet where she whelped and found Zo had an infection in her uterus that was likely there when she whelped. There's a chance the puppies caught it in the whom or they were getting it through her milk. The way they would feed off only certain ni***es leads me to believe that was the case but it's only speculation.
We are on the other side of it at this point but with only two puppies left. Zoe is doing much better, eating better and the pups are growing like weeds. You can say it was a hell of a roller coaster ride and not in a good way. It's certainly not easy breeding dogs but man, we cannot get a break.

Each and every time we head afield this boy and I connect a little more. I didn't know what to expect out of this season and I'm certainly guilty of expecting way too much of my dogs but in this case Red has exceeded whatever I thought might be his first season.

We may have not taken a ton of upland birds this year but there's time for that. Our dogs are our family and it's important we connect on a level that is unmatched by any sort of training someone writes in the pages of a book.

We shouldn't play favorites but Red boy you make it really hard at times.

A few shots I managed to take plus I'm thankful for a few rare of me snapped from our trip last week. I'm already thinking of next year. Although there's plenty of hunting left this season I fear sharpies and huns will have to wait. We will see. 😉

This boy impressed me yesterday. Red certainly needs some tightening up in the blind but that will come. His ability to see downed birds in the water from his first retrieve to the last was 10 fold. If he had a few more I think he would have it figured out. It's tough when he doesn't see the bird fall but he listens really well to directions on the water so Ill take it!

Quick little evening hunt with .mike to shake the rust off and get Red out for the first time. We ran into a covey of ruffies and busted 2 roosters but the highlight was Red surprised us with a retrieve on a rooster that was all but lost. We didn't think it was hit but here Red comes with it in his mouth. Good boy Red!!
