Everyone in the veterinary field has hard days, horrid clients, staff shortages, and weeks that just don't go to plan

Just remember to hold on to the positive and the good

The lovely clients, the cute animals, the success stories, the fab team members, the lunch breaks you took, the bloods you managed, the catheters you placed, the cups of coffee you were made, the push ups you made after work, the drip pump you stopped beeping incessantly, the patient you made eat when everyone else tried.... Etc.

However small, own it, savour it and fill your mind with all the lovely positives If you think of them all, tiny ones included, your positives will ALWAYS outweigh the negatives

Client Communication Part 1:

Show them you CARE - they won't trust you with their pet because of how much you know - just how much you CARE. Using your clinical exam - point out the concerning aspects like tacky mucous membranes, a painful abdomen, high temperature etc clients cannot see their pet the way you do and helping them SEE your concerns will allow them to understand why treatment is important

Structure the discussion - what are the clinical signs, what are the possible causes, what diagnostics need to be done to rule things out and uncover the underlying cause and then what is the treatment - this way the owners can follow your thought process.

Be honest that the case is challenging and will require specialist advice or further research- Manage expectations and make a clear treatment plan - you CANNOT fix everything so ensure they understand the prognosis AND complications associated with surgeries and medical conditions. This includes TIME FRAMES of when things will occur , this helps manage client complaints..
