The vision of The Duck Refuge @ Misty Meadow Farm is to save domestic waterfowl from starvation, predator attacks, and suffering. Domestic waterfowl are bred to be heavier than their wild counterparts, which means they are unable to fly. Mission:
Rescue abandoned and/or injured domestic ducks and geese from local ponds. Rehabilitate when needed. Rehome on an individual basis

Case 24-0706, arrived November 3:

This immature Red-shouldered Hawk was found on the side of a Milton road after it was struck by a car. The bird arrived with a concussion and a blood-filled right eye. We are treating with oral pain control and anti-inflammatory medications and eye drops.

This time of year I like to bump up the nutrients. Found a great recipe for a “Flock Block.” The idea is that the birds will pick out items they find inside as they need them.
On the one hand, it’s kind of gross mixing and baking mealworms in your kitchen. But on the other hand, the herbs and molasses made for a very fragrant odor.

Only advice is- be sure to place the block where your BAD DOGS don’t get into it. Otherwise it’ll be gone in a few minutes and your dog will have bad gas all day. 🐶

Unfortunately an invasive Spotted Lanternfly was confirmed in Fulton County as of November 14th. This invasive pest poses a significant threat to our agriculture, ornamental, and timber industry, so if you see one:
1) Take a photo to document the insect.
2) Kill it.
3) Report the sighting to the Ga Invasive Species Task Force: https://www.gainvasives.org/slf/

Welcome to The Refuge, pretty Patita.
It was a sad goodbye, but her family loved this girl enough to bring Patita here to live her life with other ducks.
She joined the flock in no time, and isn’t afraid to give the chickens and geese her opinion.

The trail cameras around the edge of our pasture pick up some fun videos this time of year. I just love it when the fawns come out to play.

Today we are celebrating the life of Miss Vickie, aka Vickie the Chickie! Last Easter a few children absconded Vickie from their grandparents poultry farm. She is now five month old and while her peers are being sent off for processing, Miss Vickie is still living the good life. She is, however, substantially larger than the other chickens her age. They are mostly heritage breeds, and she’s a commercially bred chicken. Cheers to Vickie!

And just like that, the 2024 Intake Season is over. In order to properly care for the current residents, we will be operating on a waitlist.

The Refuge welcomes the fantastic three! Jane, Cade, Charlotte, let the fun begin!

These little naughties are going to get me in trouble with the groundskeeper (my hubby). He draws the line when it comes to ducks in the pool. 🤪🦆🏖️

Due to predator challenges, we have installed several cameras. Look closely at the lower left corner of this video. In over 20 years, we have never seen Canada geese on our property so this was a surprise. I haven't seen this mamma goose or her goslings in person yet, but now I'll be on the lookout for her.
