Why does a purebred puppy from a reputable club breeder cost so much?

1. Health Testing on Sire and Dam
2. Routine Veterinary Care
3. Breeding Costs. Progesterone Testing, Stud Fees, Brucellosis Testing, Travel to and from. TCI, Frozen Semen, Chilled Semen, Shipped Semen
4. Quality Puppy Food and Supplements
5. Whelping Supplies (boxes, pens, toys, expendables, supplements, other containment)
6. Vet Checks for Puppies, Vaccines, Dewormers, Microchips
7. AKC registration and Microchip Registration
8. My time. It takes about a week of my time arranging the breeding and to raise the puppies until 8 weeks that is a minimum of 1500 hours of work and effort.
9. Puppy kits, printed materials, and health information.
10. My time spent educating owners and continuing to give advice for the life of the dog.

I won’t include the club memberships, championships, travel to shows, advertising, hundreds of hours of time spent promoting purebred dogs. I won’t include missed vacations, sleepless nights, very high repro vet bills, missed breedings, c sections, singletons, or bad luck. All expensive and we do it for no other reason than to preserve our breeds.

If I hear another person say they are just looking for a pet and not a showdog then my advice to them is go ahead and buy a car with no warranty, no manual, no VIN or registration and the odometer is broken. Good luck with that. I hope you have a good trainer and good insurance. Most of what we produce are just pets. Loved cherished companions that go to carefully screened homes. it is only the exceptional ones we breed. That therein lies the difference.

Yesterday, we shared the term, "croupier," and heard from several of you: More terms, please!

This is one of those things you've noticed as long as you've owned dogs, but may not have known that there's a name for it. Say it with us: Rugae Palatinae.

It’s no easy thing to get a Puli to pose for a picture of his rugae palatinae, but this one sacrificed his dignity to help further the cause of education. See those ridges (or folds) on the roof of his mouth? They’re not easy to see because the dog kept grousing that this wasn’t his best side, and consequently, they’re out of focus – but you can get the general idea that there are ridges up on his hard palate, as there are on every dog’s hard palate. You usually see this when your dog yawns or while brushing teeth. These formations not only help a dog with manipulating food and swallowing it, but also to drink water. Again, they’re called “rugae palatinae,” rugae meaning “ridges,” and palatinae referring to the palate. They are also known as “plica palatine,” and the study of these patterns is called palatoscopy. Fascinating to us is that they can be used for s*x determination, in orthodontics, and forensic odontology. The number of rugae in dogs range between 8 and 10, according to the McCurnin’s Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians, and in brachycephalic breeds, the ridges are closely positioned rather than spaced out.

As for the dogs, the rugae palatinae come into play during a method called adhesion. Liquid moves through the oral cavity to the esophagus against gravity on the surface of the dog’s tongue as it’s drawn upwards, then a tight contact between the tongue surface and those ridges on the roof of the mouth (palatal rugae) traps the liquid and keeps it from falling out as the tongue is protruded.

And now you know!

Take5 for Australian Terriers!

I love Australian Terriers. I’ve had dogs all my life, mostly sporting dogs...German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, Golden Retrievers, English Pointers and now Aussies! I’ve shown dogs in Conformation, Agility, Barn Hunts as well as played Rally obedience, and tricks games. I own Harmony Dog Training, a dog training business offering Family Manners Obedience, Rally, Puppy Socials, Puppy Play Days, and Breed Handling.

Why did I switch breeds to Australian Terriers? The breed is smart, friendly, loving, agile, courageous. As I was turning 50, I thought it would be a good thing to “down-size” as I got older. I still have a Champion English Pointer in my house - and proud of her many conformation and field accomplishments.

I believe in breeding Australian Terriers that are structurally sound and friendly, as they make wonderful travel partners, show dogs, performance dogs for dock diving, obedience, barn hunting, earth do***ng, trick do***ng, dog dancing, plus wonderful house dogs, hiking partners, they are great with kids and love to meet people! They are the BEST!
