Pygmy Spotted Skunk

The pygmy spotted skunk (Spilogale pygmaea) — endemic to Mexico and belonging to the genus Spilogale — is the smallest of all skunk species, growing to be only seven to 18 inches in length, and also the most carnivorous, living on spiders, birds, reptiles, small mammals, and eggs.7 It is listed on the IUCN Red List as a vulnerable species.8 Its decreasing population is a result of residential and commercial development, hunting and trapping, and disease.

STRIPED SKUNK

Scientific Name: Mephitis mephitis

An instantly recognizable skunk, the striped skunk is what most people think of when they think of skunks. With two white stripes running down its back, striped skunks are also known to emit a pungent odor when they are scared, frightened, or in any way upset.

Striped skunks are native to North America, southern Canada, and northern Mexico. In North America, they can be found in various different parts, such as wooded areas, deserts, and even urban cities. However, striped skunks mainly prefer existing in open areas, if they can.

Hog-Nosed Skunks

Just like its name suggests, hog-nosed skunks have a snout that is bald and very broad, much like a pig. They use their sniffers to find food in the ground, and they eat animals such as beetles, insect larvae, and grubs.

Hog-nosed skunks are found mostly in North America, Central America, and parts of South America. There are also different species of these types of skunks, including the American hog-nosed skunk, which is the largest at up to 10 pounds and a length of more than two feet.

Eastern Spotted Skunk

Skunks are famous for the thick, white stripe most have along their backs, but the eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) of the Spilogale genus bears spots instead. In addition to their namesake markings, these skunks, found in the eastern U.S., differ from striped skunks in that they lift themselves into an impressive handstand position before they spray.
