Eight tips to ensure your dog keeps cool over the hot Summer months:

1. PLAN YOUR WALKS

Avoid walking your dog or shorten the length of your walk if the weather is hot. Dogs cannot cope with heat as well as humansand even a warm day can cause dogs to overheat especially when exercising.
Would it be more sensible you to arrange your dogs walks for early Morning or lateer in the evening when the temperature has reduced to a more manageable level for your dog? If your dog does not require lengthy walks could you instead carry out some stimulating activities in your home?
If walking a dog in warm weather please ensure you and your dog take regular breaks in the shade and take some water and a portable bowl with you to ensure your dog has plenty of fluids.

2. PROTECT YOUR DOG'S PAWS FROM HOT SURFACES

Sand and tarmac are two surfaces which heat up in the sun and can therefore be painful for your dog’s paws. If you are in any doubt test the surface with the back of your hand and if it is too hot for you it will also be far to hot for your dogs paws. Confine your route to grassy and shaded areas to ensure your dogs comfort, if there are no such areas postpone your walk until the surface temerature drops to a more comfortable temperature.

3. LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE

Prevention is far better than cure and hopefully by taking note of the heat and temperature heat stroke will be avoided. Should the worst ever happen it is however vitally important you are able to recognise the signs of heat stroke in dogs which include:
• Heavy panting
• General Lethargy
• Shaking or weakness
• Foaming / drolling at the mouth
• Confusion or loss of coordination
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Seizures

If you suspect your dog has heatstroke do not delay and contact your vet as a matter of urgency, whilst you contact your vet you should also:
• Move the dog to a shaded and cool area
• Keep them calm and still
• Place your dog top of a cool wet towel, cooling mat or place them in the breeze of a fan
• Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water
• Pour cool water over the dog’s feet, ears and head. Never use ice or very cold water as this can cause shock
• Gradually start to move cool water over their body but not too much or this will induce shivering.
• If possible, continue to cool your dog on transit to your vet

4. USE UP YOUR DOGS ENERGY IN ALTERNATIVE WAYS

In warm weather it’s is maybe an option to explore ways ways to use up your dog’s mental and physical energy other than undertaking dog walks. As an example if your dog likes to run for hours this would be very unwise in warmer temperatures. You could instead hide their toys or treats in a small area and let them find them by their sense of smell you could also freeze their food or use frozen treats in toys or food puzzle toys to keep them stimulated. As a further option you could encourage your dog to play with their toys or treats in a shaded paddling pool. The most important point is being careful to ensure whatever the activity your dog remains calm and well out of the heat of the day.

5. NEVER LEAVE DOGS IN CARS

It seems obvious however despite numerous warnings some humans still leave their dogs in hot cars! Leaving a dog alone in a hot car can be fatal, evenif you park your car in the shade with the windows open, dogs can still become distressed and uncomfortable and could develop heat stroke very quickly. Make sure you always have a plan, so your dog isn't left alone in the car or any other enclosed spaces.
If at all possible you should avoid travelling in your car with your dog on a hot day. If you do need to travel, make sure that you use sun shade covers on the windows, so avoiding direct sunlight on your animal whilst you are travelling. A good tip is to ensure you have cooled your car down and have the air conditioning on prior to putting your dog in. Try to avoid travelling at the hottest time of the day and consider your route travelling when there is less traffic wherever possible so ensuring you do not get caught up in heavy traffic for prolonged periods of time. Always ensure you dog has adequate supplies of water for the duration of your journey. A non splash bowl is recommended and these are widely available on the market place.

6. ENSURE YOUR DOG REMAINS FIT AND HEALTHY

It's very important to keep your dog fit and healthy all year round, whatever that looks like for them. During warmer weather it's especially important to help them maintain a healthy weight. Most dogs are less active when it's hot, so it may be beneficial to adjust the amount of food you give them to reflect how much energy they expend. Warmer weather is also a great opportunity to practice basic tricks and training indoors as it is a lot cooler indoors and can help you maintain a great relationship with your dog and help keep your dog’s brain active.

7. BE CAREFUL LETTING THEM SWIM

Some dogs just love water and swimming and cool water can be so tempting for your dog in hot weather as it is a great way to cool off. You should however be mindful that some places can be unsafe and might have strong currents that can be dangerous, or algae and bacteria which could make your dog sick.
Unless you know the area well and are absolutely sure the area is a safe environment for your dog it may be far safer for you to try and locate clear, clean shallow streams your dog can paddle in briefly to cool off. You should also ensure you provide your dog with separate clean water in a water bowl for them to drink.

8. REMEMBER TO REGULARY GROOM YOUR DOG

Regular grooming and clipping will keep your dog's coat clean, free of knots, and helps them keep cool. Speak to a professional groomer as they will know what’s best for your dog and their specific coat.

We hope this provides you with some help and advice, now the remember Summer is a fun time for dogs and humans alike so get out their with your four legged friends and enjoy the Summer whilst it lasts!

Springtime and your dogs

Spring can make give you more energy with lengthening and warmer days replacing the cold and gloomy winter days and nights

It is not just humans who can feel different in Spring our dogs can also experience “Spring Fever” and this blog will hopefully give some information to dog owners as to how you can handle these normal seasonal changes and safely enjoy Springtime with your dog.

Springtime

This time of year presents dogs with a plethora of new smells to sniff out such as blooming flowers and trees as well as smaller animals arising from their winter hibernation leaving lots of different scents which your dog will love to fully investigate.

It is no wonder your dog may reach a point where their senses are overloaded. We humans can smell the new scents of Springtime, as our dogs have a sensory system far more acute than humans just pause for a moment and think what Spring may bring to your dogs sensory system.

Changes may bring about a differing in your dogs temperament and behaviour which may include unexpected bolting or escaping from gardens chasing a new and very interesting smell. Dogs may also ignore commands, not all dogs react this way to new stimuli just be aware this may be a possibility. This is important as it could place you dog at an increased risk of running out into a public road or chasing after livestock with all it’s inherent dangers. There are lots of measures can can put in place to prevent any such issues.

Flea and worm prevention

Flies, worms and ticks can be prevalent during Spring, make sure your dog is up to date with their treatments ask your vet for advice if you are unsure how to manage.

After walk action

After your dog walks wash your dogs legs and rinse their fur as this reduces itchiness and also assists in removing pollen and dust which can cause discomfort.

Practise recall training

This helps to maintain and reinforce your personal bond with your dog and encourage positive behaviour. Always find some safe environment where you and your dog can practice recall and ensure both you and your dog have fun when practising recall as dogs learn best when they enjoy themselves. Always remember to praise your animal when they recall promptly a treat would never go amiss!

Control your dog near livestock

Springtime always means a surge in baby animals particular apparent if you reside in the country. Whilst your dog will be keen to investigate new scents when out walking never let your dog chase livestock as this is illegal and dangerous for all concerned. Always walk your dog to heel on a lead especially if your walk takes you in close encounters with Spring lambs.
Towns and other urban areas can also be fraught with danger as dogs love chasing squirrels and foxes which could place your dog in danger of running out into a public road.

Try New Walks

Dogs are excited by new smells in the air, by mixing up dog walks and introducing new walks this is a fantastic way to help your dog explore more sensory stimuli. This gives your dog sensory enrichment and allows them to investigate safely all the new smells new walks provide.

Toxic plants

Please remember some plants are toxic to your dog, some plants to avoid are:

Tulips
Daffodils
Lillies
Rapeseed
Bluebells

If the worst does happen and your dog digests a toxic plant keep a close eye on your dog. In the vast majority of cases a trip to the vets is not needed. If however your dog vomits, suffers diarrhoea, loses appetite or experiences seizures this could indicate severe poisoning and you should take your dog to a vet as a matter of urgency.

We hope this blog is useful, please remember every dog is different and only you know your dog best. We hope that knowing what to look out for will enable you to be prepared for Spring. We hope you have loads of fun and enjoyment with your dog this Springtime
and finally just remember Summer is only a further 3 months away.

Caring For Dogs During Firework Season

Fireworks can cause distress and anxiety for many dogs, planning ahead can help dogs cope.
You can create a safe haven within your home which is a quiet area where dogs feel in control.

You can train your dog to familiarise the quiet area with positive experiences by leaving dog chews and favourite toys in the area. It’s important to swap your dogs favourite toys to avoid boredom.

Over time, dogs will understand the quiet area is a safe and enjoyable area of the house and when fireworks go off they may automatically choose to stay in the quiet area. It is important that dogs have free access to their quiet area especially when you are not at home.

Calming your pet

There are numerous methods to calm your dog(s):

• Playing some relaxing music is a common means of calming your dog.
• Walk your dog(s) in daylight before fireworks are likely to be set off.
• Ensure your dog(s) is moved to their safe haven each evening before fireworks begin.
• Ensure there are things for you to do in the home so your dog(s) aren’t left alone.
• Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks and blackout the safe haven so your dog(s) can’t see any flashes outside.
• Put on the TV to drown out the fireworks sounds.
• Ignore the fireworks yourself and play with a dog toy, try and encourage your dog(s) to join in but don’t force them

In severe cases you can seek advice from your vet who may be prepared to prescribe pheromone diffusers. As a last resort your vet may prescribe medication to help in calming your dog(s).

I walk Wilbur on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons as part of my business “Dapper Dog Walks” with my support worker Roger.
Wilbur is a male cream coloured Pug who loves going out for a walk and likes having a good old sniff as we go along.

My walks with Wilbur last at least half an hour and we walk in a Bishop Auckland park. Wilbur gets on with other dogs he meets on walks and is very friendly. Wilbur does as he is instructed and is a quite well behaved dog who I enjoy walking.

In addition to Wilbur I also walk Jimmy and Walter both male Cocker Spaniels and Willow a female Labradoodle. I collect the dogs from Newton Aycliffe with my support worker Roger. Both Cocker Spaniels are excitable and need walking to release their energies whilst Willow is more relaxed and easygoing. My walks with the trio of dogs lasts longer than the walks with Wilbur and lasts approximately an hour. We have the dogs on the leads until we get to woodland where it is safe to let the dogs off the lead so that the dogs have free rein to roam about. When it is time to move on, all three dogs respond well to recall.

I really enjoy the company of dogs and my new business and look forward to walking an array of dogs great and small in the future.
