Elance Heavy Water (Zoom x Vera) is now in residence and co-owned with Anne Quinn. He just turned 2 years old, and is coming along nicely. Photos from Gordon Walter and Betty De la Rosa. He is one of several nice males in this litter and we look forward to his future.

New BISS Ch. Elance Honour Guard. Zoom x Vera, owned by Tammy Hawco.

Tammy brought 21 month old Rogue to the AKC shows and graciously allowed me to help her groom and show this exciting young male.

Rogue took BOB from the classes on Friday to finish. Then moved up to Specials, in an excellent group of entries he went on to take Select Dog at the Borzoi Canada National specialty, a Best of Opposite S*x, another BOB, and BOB/BISS at the Foothills Gazehound Specialty. Thank you to the judges who complimented on the quality of this young male.

This is the second BISS winner Vera has produced (Vannah, MBISS Ch. Elance Velvet Ribbons is from her first litter), and they stand in quality along with Wendy Wilkinson's Finch (Elance Veiled Rose), who took BOW at the BCOA 2024 National specialty.

We look forward to Rogue's future. Congratulations to his owner Tammy Hawco!

If you've noticed your Borzoi has dandruff after their bath, it's very likely due to the bathing technique.

Back in the day my dogs would have dandruff in their coat after every bath I gave them. When I mentioned this to a wise person who had been in the breed longer at the time, she pointed out that it was likely due to the fact that I was scrubbing my dog's skin during the bathing process. Indeed I was! She noted that unlike the human scalp, the skin on a dog does not produce oil, so it doesn't need to be scrubbed clean like our own scalp does. Rather, just the hair needs to be washed. Scrubbing Borzoi skin during a bath causes flakes of epithelial cells to be released, thus the dandruff I was seeing afterwards.

Thus I stopped scrubbing their skin when I bathed my Borzoi, and began simply massaging the shampoo through the coat to clean it. The results were clean dogs, no dandruff. Try it!

This photo is one of my favourite bi***es of all time: Brenna (Elance Smooth As Silk - owned by Gordon and Carol Walter.) No dandruff on this girl. :-)

Cello (Elance Heavy Water.) Pictured here in a Jonathan Stade photo from the FGC specialty, as well as right after his first show groom before the weekend, Cello was entered in three events at Canada's largest dog show, the Alberta Kennel Club. He came home with two Best Puppy in Specialty awards (Borzoi Canada and Foothills Gazehound), a Best of Winners over adults, and a Specialty Reserve Winners dog over adults. It was his first dog show, and he handled it like he's been doing it all his life - until the end of day three, that is. By then the need to play finally broke out in the ring. LOL!

We are growing out three very promising boys from the Zoom X Vera litter. Drake (Elance Hyperion) was the first to hit the show ring, and he took a BOS in Gazehound Sweeps, as well as a WD/BOW over adults in early June. This weekend was Cello's turn. We'll get the third boy out in the fall.

We are also growing out two girls. Next weekend will be Nora's (Elance Hourglass) turn at a show. She's the wild one, so we'll see how many feet stay on the ground... We'll keep you posted!

Vannah at 20 months old, in her birthday suit. Look close and you'll see her entire topline from her ears on back is just wisps.

Regardless, she is pictured here going Best in Specialty from the classes at the Alberta Lure Coursing Association sighthound specialty, over 70+ hounds, under breeder/judge Jocelyn Gagne of Starkeeper Irish Wolfhound fame. Vannah also took another Best of Breed from the classes this same weekend, as well as another Best of Winners. She is now a Champion.

So often I get this request:
"I want my dog to be able to play with other dogs."
And my answer is always -
"Why?"

The reasons are usually similar. Things like, I have friends with dogs and I want to be able to go over and have fun with them. Or, I think she's missing out. Or, I've always had a dog who liked to play.

The problem with these answers is that they are all based on what the human wants, not at all on what the dog wants. Playing and enjoying the company of other dogs is something that WE like because it gives US pleasure. It however, has very little effect on a dogs quality of life.

Not all dogs want to play with other dogs past adulthood. In fact it's very common for lots of dogs past 3 years old to start looking at play with other strange dogs the way human adults look at teenage raves. They may co exist well, or play very occasionally with close dog friends, but the enjoyment of large groups of rough housing and playing no longer thrills them. They'd rather go on a walk with you and play with you. Some dogs, whether because of personality, genetics, or past experiences/traumas, never want to be around other dogs, even co existing is a challenge. However even well socialized, playful adult dogs may not like every dog they meet and as a result be choosy in who they play with. There's nothing wrong with them, it's us humans that need a lesson.

Our expectations and desire for dogs to play with one another has to be checked. I often tell people if your dog doesn't like other dogs, I can help them work through some of that and show them how to walk past them, even be in the same room with them calmly, but can't force them to enjoy playing with another dog the same way I can't force you to like someone else if you just don't.

If you have a dog that doesn't like to play, your dog isn't broken. Change the way you think and give your dog other fun activities he will enjoy rather than forcing an expectation on him that isn't fair. Enjoy your dog for who they are, rather than worrying about who they aren't.

Shimmer has had a litter of five, sired by her nephew Zoom.

Zoom (CanCh. Glacier's Zoom Zoom at Elance) finished easily. He is incredibly fast, and incredibly sweet. I have to check the car of every visitor to make sure they aren't sneaking him off.

Shimmer (AmCanCh. Elance Moonshimmer) is the 2018 BCOA WB/BOW.

Sire and dam have completed all health testing, though Shimmer's CHIC number has yet to be applied for. We will do that this week.
