Considerations for Introducing Cats and Dogs: A Cautionary Note on Adoption

Friends, a quick post to shed light on the complexities surrounding the adoption of cats and dogs, particularly when it comes to mixing different species. While many well-intentioned people may promise you the perfect harmony between your future furry friends to get the successful adoption going, the reality can be far more nuanced, and it's crucial to approach the decision with careful consideration.

Firstly, as many new adopters lack specialized knowledge, they often place trust in the organizations facilitating adoptions. However, it's essential to be aware that not all situations are as idyllic as they may seem, especially when it comes to introducing cats and dogs.

A common ploy involves presenting charming photos and videos of cats and dogs coexisting harmoniously to convince potential adopters that everything will be fine. Yet, the truth is not always so straightforward. Several factors need to be taken into account, such as the age of the animals involved, the breed of the dog, and the correct introduction process.

Age plays a significant role in the success of introducing animals. While it's easier to integrate animals that are very young, older animals may find it challenging to adapt, and incorrect introductions can lead to issues down the line.

When it comes to breeds, not all dogs are created equal in terms of compatibility with cats. For instance, breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers often have a friendly temperament and may easily adapt to living with a cat. On the other hand, certain breeds such as Huskies, Malamutes, Akitas, Basenjis, Shiba Inus, or Karelian Bear Dogs, known for their strong hunting instincts and unpredictable behavior, should be approached with caution. Specialized assistance from a behaviorist may be required for successful introductions, but even with professional guidance, there's no guarantee of long-term compatibility.

The aftermath of a poorly managed introduction can be severe, leading to trauma for both the owners and the animals involved. The risk of the cat not surviving weeks, months, or even years after the introduction is a real concern. One wrong move triggering a dog's instinct can result in a disastrous outcome, leaving owners traumatized and potentially leading the dog back to a shelter.

Therefore, it is crucial to seek professional advice outside the adopting organization, involve experts in the field, and carefully evaluate if you and your family are ready to endure the challenging introduction period. Ensure that all family members are on the same page and consider the potential risks involved.

In conclusion, accidents happen, and the trauma from such incidents can persist for a long time. To minimize the risks and make informed decisions, please seek guidance from professionals, thoroughly evaluate your ability to handle the situation, and read more about the intricacies of introducing cats and dogs. Thank you.

Good morning!
Just a short post on feeding.
I've noticed a many overweight dogs around. We all want our fur buddies to be happy, but turns out, we might be doing more harm than good. Quick heads up – dry dog food puffs up in their stomach. The suggested serving on the box might seem too small, and you think your dog's still hungry. But here's the deal: after a water chug (which should always be there), the food fills up the whole belly.

Just to break it down, 1 cup of dry food is like having a whole bowl of rice with meat and veggies or wet food. Feeding your dog an entire bowl of dry stuff isn't just bad for their health and makes them chunky, it's also a pricey move. This is just a short post, so it's a good idea to dig deeper online to make sure your pup stays fit, and your wallet stays happy.

In the end, observe your dog and match the amount of food to his/her needs also based on physical activity, energy levels, and temperatures outside.

Have an awesome day with your furry friend!

Caring for dogs in winter is crucial to ensure their well-being. Here are some tips to make their life easier, if they are outdoor dogs.

🐶 Water Management:
Change your dog's water regularly to prevent freezing.
Add some warm water and a dash of oil to help avoid freezing and provide extra calories.

🐶 Insulated Dog House:
Ensure your dog's house is well-insulated.
Place the dog house on a raised platform to prevent it from sitting directly on the cold ground
Use a righ size (not too big) dog house to make it easier for your dog to warm up.

🐶 Bedding and Shelter:
Provide a blanket or curtain to prevent cold winds from getting into the dog house.
Use straw instead of hay, as hay can become wet, cold, or rotten.

🐶 Proper Nutrition:
Include higher-fat meals in your dog's diet to provide extra energy for staying warm.
Consider adding warm meals to their bowl during the winter.

🐶 Make sure you dont use chain or anything metal around dogs neck. Metal will freeze to their skin.

🐶 Check their paws often. You can use vaseline or other oily creams (can be vit E) to prevent frost bite on their paws.

These tips cover essential aspects of winter care for dogs, focusing on water management, shelter, bedding, and nutrition to ensure your dog stays comfortable and healthy during the colder months.
There is much more you can do, so reaserch a bit on internet if you're interested. I'll keep this post shorter.

If you don't own a Husky or Other thick winter fur dog, please help him/her survive and don't allow for situation from the picture to happen.

''It's ok, my dog is friendly!''
No! No! It's NOT ok.
Just because your dog is freindly doesn't mean other dogs are, some may be nervous, reactive, fearful, in training or owned by people who want to be left alone.

NEVER LET YOUR DOG RUN UP TO ANOTHER DOG!

Respect others and their need for space.

If you have NO VOICE CONTROL over your dog keep them on the leash!

We absolutely agree with this message !

🌟 It was time to introduce our amazing super alpha female, Lajka Taika! 🌟

Our 4 rescue puppies are growing up quickly, indulging in their playful antics, learning from one another 'the bad stuff', and striving to establish their own hierarchy by fighting. It's important to note that they're navigating this journey without their mama and, unfortunately, aren't receiving as much attention as they would in a loving home.

Lajka isn't your ordinary dog; she's a hunting and primitive breed, making her more akin to a wolf than other breeds. In fact, she just needs to look in their direction firmly to get a correct response and submission (they know she is serious!)
This unique background ensures that their communication remains crystal clear and assertive, unlike the muddled signals often found in many house breeds.

Observe how gracefully, assertively, and calmly Lajka manages the situation, gently guiding and correcting the puppies. In just 5 minutes, her expertise accomplishes more than my entire day of attempts to control them! 😉

Now, these 4 precious puppies are ready to find new, caring homes. If you're looking to add a bundle of joy to your family, these little ones are eagerly waiting to bring their love and warmth into your life! 🐾🏡

Their full story is here and please help by sharing or donating. Thank you !!!

Have you ever found yourself in a battle of wits with your cat over a pill? 😼 Well, sharpen your strategy because we've got the playbook right here!
And for our fellow dog lovers, don't worry, there is something for you too! 🐕💊
🤣😂

HOW TO GIVE YOUR CAT A PILL:

1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. 😎 Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill inside end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open Makewith dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12) Call fire department to retrieve the f--- - - - cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

13) Tie the little b**tard's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak filet. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for RSPCA to collect "mutant cat from hell" and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

22/09/2023

Fireworks, gunshots, storms, and other loud noises can be incredibly distressing for our pets. 🐾🎆💥 REMEMBER: Dogs hearing is many times stronger than human!

They don't understand what's happening, and their fear can drive them to panic and escape from home, putting themselves in danger.

Here are some tips to help keep our fur babies safe:

1️⃣ Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pets can retreat to during noisy times. Stock it with their favorite toys and bedding (could be bathroom with blakets)

2️⃣ Stay Inside: If possible, keep your pets indoors when you know there will be fireworks, thunderstorms, or other loud events. This greatly reduces their chances of escaping and will make them feel safer.

3️⃣ ID and Microchip: Ensure your pets have proper identification with phone number and, if possible, a microchip. This can be a lifesaver if they do happen to get lost.

4️⃣ Comfort and Reassurance: Spend time with your pets during loud events. Comforting them with pets, treats, and soothing words can make a big difference (no, its not true you are strenghtening fear reaction by doing so!)

5️⃣ Consult a Vet: If your pet's fear and anxiety are severe with high level of trembling, crying, vomiting, biting etc, consult your veterinarian. They can provide advice and even prescribe medication to help keep your furry friend calm.

If you need to go for a walk make sure your dogs collar is safely tight or wear a safe harness to prevent your dog from slipping from the gear in panic and escaping.

🐾❤️ Let's ensure they stay safe, happy, and loved!
