Our Executive Director just left the US Federal Courthouse in Rockford, Illinois after attending the hearing for Petland’s lawsuit against the State of Illinois. In attendance of the hearing were one lawyer for each side, the judge and his aides and our organization. No pet stores were in attendance.

Both sides made their case and the hearing lasted just under two hours. Since no recording devices were allowed, Mindi took extensive notes on the arguments and will be making them available soon. Mindi was able to meet with the Assistant Attorney General afterwards to clear up some of Petland’s claims and she was very excited to learn about the Iowa Attorney General case against JAKS puppies and how that was connected to the Chicago ordinance. You may remember that the Chicago ordinance was also challenged and then was legally upheld.

The judge did not make a ruling on the temporary restraining order, but will do so by the end of the day today.

As it stands, no pet stores in Illinois should be selling puppies or kittens until ruled otherwise.

Last week a property in Missouri was raided and more than 57 animals were rescued from what appears to be an unlicensed puppy mill. Owner, Campbell Bee, was taken into custody and is facing a misdemeanor count of animal abuse and a felony count of making a terrorist threat, after Bee threatened harm against the police. On top of the animals that were saved, there were numerous burned and dismembered animals on the property.

Our research has connected Campbell Bee to at least three Petland locations, one of which he sold at least 40 puppies to, as well as an additional pet store in Texas (Pet City Houston). Nearly every store that we have connected to Bee has testified at local and state hearings in order to assure policy makers that they do not source from puppy mills.

On this week's episode of "Truth, Lies and Puppy Mills" we get into the details of the case and discuss how our research shows that pet stores are sourcing from many unlicensed breeders, as well as USDA licensed ones.

Petland is headquartered in Chillicothe, Ohio & it is the only puppy selling national chain. Some Petland stores are owned by corporate while others are franchised and locally owned.

While many believe it is common knowledge that Petland sources their puppies from puppy mills, we believe it is important to highlight the information we have obtained on 15 of the Petland stores located in OH.

We will start off our Petland series with the Petland in SouthPark Mall located in Strongsville, Ohio owned by Petland corporate. SouthPark mall is home to not one, but TWO pet stores in very close proximity. Petland & Pick of the Litter pet stores.

The Petland in SouthPark mall purchases a majority of its puppies from Missouri, Missouri is the puppy mill capital of the US. The Missouri high volume breeders & puppy brokers include; Monica Sheeley (South Paw Pets/ Premium Paws), Tony Schindler (QD Kennels), Enelia Dick - NOT USDA LICENSED.

In addition to sourcing from Missouri puppy mills, Petland Strongsville also purchases puppies from Indiana (Levi Graber - Blue Ribbon Puppies), Oklahoma ( Karetn S Buffalohead -KCZ Amazing Pets) & Iowa (Brian Mohrfield - Select Puppies AKA Lucky Puppies Co.)

Not only does Petland Strongsville ship in hundreds of dogs from out of state puppy mills, they also use Kallie and Josh Bateman, “Bateman Diversified”, Puppy Travelers Transport, who were mentioned on the 2018 HSUS Horrible Hundred list due to unethical and deadly transport practices.

We will say it again, until the public stops shopping at pet stores like Petland, the puppy mills will stay in business. If there is demand, the mills will keep producing.

BAD BREEDER ALERT! East Palestine, Ohio: Cheryl Kinder—Failed two inspections due to seven dogs in need of veterinary care, puppies in crowded, stacked cages, and some dogs who had no water.

According to state records, breeder Cheryl Kinder failed two consecutive state inspections in September and October 2019. Issues noted at the September inspection included: some dogs did not have water; some weaning kennels did not meet minimum cage size requirements; cages were stacked, which is against state law; surfaces could not be easily cleaned; a lack of environmental enrichment; and a matted dog and seven dogs in need of dental treatment. A photograph taken on that day shows cages stacked at least three high, in violation of Ohio’s new kennel law; all three levels of cages were filled with puppies who appeared to have barely enough space to stand upright.
