Times are hard for all small businesses!! Shop local or lose the small town businesses that make Havre de Grace unique!

With all the talk of trees yesterday, we thought it was appropriate to share this image again. The reality is that our infrastructure is failing and needs to be replaced. New trees will be planted, and downtown will come back better than ever. However, if you don’t shop local during the construction, some businesses may not.

Last year, we had more sales over Shop Small Weekend than we did in the entire month of July; that is how important the holiday season is to small retailers. The uncertainty and timing of the upcoming construction is terrifying for us as business owners. Will we have the customers we need in our most crucial time of year?

We have been planning alternate entrances, online shopping options, and any other strategies we can think of to protect business and cut expenses during this necessary work. We can try to plan for everything, but now more than ever, we simply need you.

A wise friend reminded me yesterday that it’s not the trees that make Havre de Grace a Hallmark town; it’s the people. It’s the ability to walk into a store and have them know your name, or to pop into your favorite coffee shop and have them remember your order. She is right. It’s you—our customers and our friends that make Havre de Grace magical.

So, if we are indeed a Hallmark town (and I believe we are), here’s a Hallmark plot for you: Save Small Town Christmas. Take action and save downtown businesses.

This Fall, brave the cold and stroll a few blocks to your favorite local store. Power through the construction and noise, come down and shop, eat, or just buy a gift card. Shop our websites from home, or share a positive comment on a small business’s post. These actions will help us weather the storm so that we can all walk on those widened sidewalks together next year.

We were during Covid and we need to do it again. Buy Local or Bye Local…it’s as simple as that.
