On dog bites, adjusting to potentially dangerous behavior patterns, how we should be more cautious and what we can do as a community to keep ourselves and our dogs safe.

This is a friendly reminder for owners of pets with fireworks anxiety. If your pet needs medication for anxiety during fireworks, you should request the necessary appointment and/or refills of that medication now, and not wait until the first of July or closer to the holiday.

I have also found, as far as treats go, that there are some freeze dried meat treats available that are usually about 3 to 5 calories per treat and if you are in a situation where you are working to reinforce good behaviors, or give your pet a little something special, I like those a lot. Milk Bones are usually more than 20 calories per treat, and for small breeds this is an awful lot to be giving several times a day.

Next week is going to bring some much warmer temperatures for New Jersey. Walking your dog and taking them to outdoor events this time of year, even before the air temperatures become dangerous, poses a concern many owners overlook.

Aphalt, blacktops, cement, and pavement temperatures.

It's easy for some people to forget about this because most people wear shoes outside, and don't often experience the scorching of scalding hot blacktop on their skin. When I worked as a vet tech, I helped treat countless burned paw pads caused by sun-baked pavement.

My personal go-to approach to making sure that my doggie friends' feet are safe is simply to put my own hand on the surface I'm asking them to walk on- and check again frequently. If it's uncomfortable or even painful for me, I know it will be the same for them.

Be sure not to take your dog places where there is no grass for them to walk and stand on should the paved ground become too hot for their feet. Avoid walking them through parking lots or anywhere with dark-colored pavement as dark colors hold more heat.

I would like to make a friendly reminder that animal etiquette and awareness is an absolute necessity of a life skill to teach your children as soon as possible. Some very good rules of thumb any animal care professional would recommend include:
-Teach your kids never to approach an unattended animal.
-Always ask the pet owner from a safe distance before approaching to pet their animal.
-If an animal withdrawals, growls, or shows teeth, don't try to pet it.
-If an animal behaves in a fearful or aggressive fashion, do not whoop, yell, mock-bark, or otherwise make loud, unnecessary noises at it.

Those are all very obviously about the potential for harm that an ANIMAL can cause them.

But what I'd also like to caution parents on is to make sure your children know NEVER to follow a stranger just because the stranger has an animal. I have been followed countless times by kids who want to pet and ask me questions about the dog I'm walking. This is very dangerous for your kids. Many kids don't recognize this as a danger. Many kids expect stranger danger to come from "creepy-looking" people who are trying to grab them or verbally convince them to leave the safe play area their parents expect them to stay in.
