This is a post for all the shelter vets and techs and staff out there. Hang in there! We see you! My mom is grateful to have quite a few shelter veterinarians in her life and let me tell you: They see a lot of very sad things and so many people put so much pressure on them. They get blamed for a lot of things sometimes, too. :( Compassion fatigue is real. I know that people within rescues also experience this and are sad when an animal is sick and doesn’t have a home and might even have to be put down. It’s awful all the way around which is why our family supports spay and neuter efforts and “adopt don’t shop.” But please - next time you call the shelter a “kill shelter” think about the people who work there. Many are so burned out and see so much sadness every day. It’s not their fault they sometimes have to make really sad decisions. No vet wants to have to make a decision to euthanize a cat or dog for space. It’s just awful. That is why it is so important to foster, donate, volunteer, ADOPT, support TNR efforts, and try to help where you can.
