Second ride back on Willow in a saddle in a few months. I asked her to elongate her frame and boy did she get long! We are doing a complete restart to our riding knowledge now that we have a saddle! Both Willow and I need work on our biomechanics so we will be going slow for a while. Today we started with a stretchy walk and trot!
She delivered! First time we have ever gotten a consistently stretched downward walk where she overtracked! (1 year ago, sit was not physically possible for her to over track due to such tight back muscles and biomechanical issues)
First leg yield attempt. Pretty happy for the first shot. Next we will work on having a bigger cross over, but she stayed so soft, supple, and with me the whole time!
2 miles yesterday, 3 miles today! We are racking up the hacking out miles! Slowly bringing her top line back into condition and using the hack outs to bring forward without nagging!
Of course she was a super star and role model for the “new kid” on the block. She despises these fountains because they roar and reflect the sun. Not to mention it’s right after very wooded and narrow road that there is no place to pull over for traffic. But, bring along a more insecure horse and she is a pro!
Love her mind and how well seasoned she is becoming. Doesn’t really spook or look anymore. Just asks to go sniff and look at things ❤️
Riding video finally! Enjoy a video update if Willow’s walk trot work! We have been working very hard on rider position and avoiding the bracing reaction she has. So this video has been a lot of work in the past few weeks coming together.
I’m super proud of her and next time we will work more with the poll being the highest part. We are still building our top line back so we have to stick with a longer rounder frame most of the time.
Willow and I got the most wonderful trot today! Going our usual “bad way” which was a surprise. I think I have changed my asymmetries and need to reevaluate 😅
sadly, my video stopped 15min into our ride so post-warm up was not recorded. So enjoy the hippo post-epic ride roll!
I’m thrilled with how Willow’s walk work is coming! We have been using ground poles to help establish a rounded, more lifted frame. It seems to really help Willow connect dots without so much interference on my part.
Check out the start of our formal square halts and how she is sitting waiting to move again. She used to stop with her hind legs miles behind her.
Looks like Luca is celebrating Willow’s new saddle too! Everyone is excited and so much happier!
Now, I just have to remember to be a slow steady methodical rider… even though I want to hurry so bad to live up to this saddle
Thrilled with how quickly Willow is coming back! She is still incredibly weak over her top line. The saddle trial is going amazingly! She has 95% of her normal range of motion compared to the 65% in conventional saddles. Once the saddle trial is over, we will be back to top line boot camp for the next 3 months so we can progress out of walk work. Maybe by then my lower leg will have figured itself out 🤣
As for me, I am rewatching and mentally riding in my head to try to get the feel back of correct posting. Unfortunately, I have lost most of the feeling in my brain so I am on a journey to find it again…
A couple of firsts in a LONG time for Willow!
Most important first — I finally am able to bridle her like normal again!! Her ear has been so painful she got several weeks off without any handling. Then we started back from below step 0 to regain trust. Slowly but surely we have been stepping forward with tiny steps to make today! It appears her ears are healed and happy again! 🤞 no relapse happens. But I could touch her ear to move it under the crown piece today!
Enjoy the video from Willow’s first day back to work! We are starting with in hand work as always to begin loosening her body back up and prepare for ridden work. We were gifted a teeter totter from a neighbor. Willow has seen it before when it was half buried and very stable. Now the supporting log rolls in a groove in the middle. This results in the whole platform shifting under her feet while it tilts! A bit unnerving even for my brave girl! After this first dodge she was happily walking across it like a careful pro.
All it takes is one step at a time and you end up where you want to go!
This girls try is amazing! The last 2 days she has really decided to forgive me and has settled back into her sweet self! Enjoy the video as she processes what I am asking and how to accomplish it!
Part 2.
Mounted, rode, and dismounted bridless! We have progressively been working through some of her worries when riding. She hasn’t been emotionally comfortable to ride and it’s showing in our relaxation under saddle. Some days she is a marshmallow at the trot and other days she is full of tension. I think this is a great way to help her understand piece by piece that there is nothing to worry about.
*the rope is just for my neighborhood to feel better I.e. that I am in control 🤣 in reality the rope means nothing to Willow as she is all seat and legs.
Not a Willow video… but Willow’s evening feeding buddy doesn’t realize she is 14 years old now… still runs around and believes in joining all barn chore duties
Willow has a great aptitude for thinkin’ and blinkin’ when she sees something new. Notice how as she approaches the wreath her blinks become more frequent. Willow emotes in subtle ways and pushed to hard too soon she shuts down and runs away.
Willow is building those “fancy trot” muscles! I am so excited to see where her trot is in 4 years! It takes a long time to build extended trot muscles and is NEVER too early to start!
As an added bonus, Willow’s normal trot has become a lot more floaty, set on her haunches, and she is now a daisy cutter because she is lifting her shoulders! Check out the video for a comparison of her new “normal” trot and her developing “fancy” trot! 😍
You have to get those “show horses” out of the arena! Sound and sane horses are not made in an arena! Willow goes on adventures a minimum of once a month! We don’t worry about any “technical” work, just focus on relaxation and adventure!

Holidays are for long rides through the neighborhood and trails!
Pretty happy with the hippo through her bounces! First time in months we have gone back to them! And first time with 16” height!
We only do 2 attempts each direction maximum of once a week. The goal isn’t to teach her to jump. Instead the goal is to let her discover how to sit back on her hocks and use her hindquarters to push. Willow used to clobber the poles even if they were on the ground because she drug herself along! Now we are starting to have some lift at the shoulders and more strength (and far more trust) in her own hind end!
If you had told me this mare would trot this relaxed and choose to put her head level/down and not run around like a lama I would not have believed you! Willow has come so far!
This snippet is from the end of our training session and she was quite tired. Also on uneven ground due to pasture and tall grass/ant piles to dodge. None the less, she is so relaxed and her strides are pretty even considering the ground! 🥰
This is how they should all walk around the neighborhood and in new places! Alert but relaxed at the same time!
Just a clip from walking down the road! The wild flowers are beautiful this year!
