A lovely relaxing evening with the main man ❤️
Finding all his itchy spots has become my favourite part of the day, and I think his too!
Well this is not a post I expected to be writing.
Yesterday I had an unfortunate fall off of a horse that resulted in a trip to the Waikato Hospital. Unfortunately, I have fractured two vertebrae in my neck, the C1 & C2 vertebrae.
To say I’m lucky is an understatement, at this stage I have avoided surgery and paralysis! I have just sat up and had a short walk for the first time in 24 hours. Other than feeling very concussed and a little weak, I feel good considering the circumstances.
This now means I have to take the next 12 weeks off of horses for recovery. Definitely not how I intended my winter going!
The rain didn’t stop Athos and I having a little play over some jumps today!
As usual, he took it all in his stride. He honestly feels as if he has been doing this for years already! Maybe we have a show hunter pony in the making?
Athos had a play up on the arena yesterday evening, I think he enjoyed himself!
Hard to believe there is only 5 weeks until equifest!!
So thankful for everything this horse has taught me! ❤️
Athos stepped things up a notch today!
After working on our roll backs and figure of 8’s, I thought why not try a jump! Athos said sure why not?
Considering this guy has jumped less than 5 times, it’s pretty remarkable that he gave it a go bridleless today!
A sneak peak into what it’s like to sit behind these cute ears!
Athos had a great session working on our bridleless today! I’m so proud of how far he has come over the past few weeks, with less than 10 sessions working on this new skill and he already feels this relaxed and confident, it’s a very cool feeling!
I’m very excited for equifest!
It’s been awhile since I have updated everyone on what we have been up to.
We have been doing a mix of things, some days are spent working on our ground work, others are spent adventuring around the farm. Athos is going very well undersaddle, leading the rides all over the place and is confident at any place in the group often taking the lead when other horses get stuck, unless it’s a ticking fence!
Here is a video of Athos’s second canter earlier this week up the farm!
Rumble helped me take Athos out on an adventure this evening to keep him moving after his gelding yesterday.
This was his first time being lead out off of another horse and as per usual Athos took on this new skill with ease and was very polite towards Rumble. Other than being considerably slower than him at times it was a great experience for him!
Here's a special video from today!
This afternoon, I spent some neutral time hanging outside Athos's yard, this time with a large handful of grass to offer out if he was to approach me again. After spending close to 30 minutes quietly eating hay beside me, he softly reached out to take the grass from my hand. This is truly remarkable, when last year it took Long Shot 33 days to take grass from my hand for the first time!
This evening I spent some time just sitting in the round yard with Athos, not asking anything of him but simply observing him while he wandered around.
I’m very pleased with his calm nature, and was surprised to have him spend a large amount of time a few metres out from me snoozing.
I did manage to capture this moment when he crept up towards me and reached out to try and sniff my boot. Hard to believe I can even be in his yard already, let alone have him be so brave!
