Playing tug with your dog can lead to resource guarding behavior if not done correctly. However, when played with rules, it can actually help a dog overcome this behavior. Ollie has been guarding her tennis ball, so we're starting with a rope toy instead. This approach helps us teach her the rules more easily without having to pry a ball from her mouth and risking a bite. talkdoggy.com #denverdogtrainer #certifieddogtrainer #resourceguarding

Big dogs off leash
There were two dogs roaming off leash at 11:56 a.m. near Joliet and 17th in Aurora, near Spencer Garrett Park where kids often play. Please share.
Today was my second loose leash training session with Rosie, a sprite 10-month-old bernedoodle. She's getting it! talkdoggy.com #denverdogtrainer #certifieddogtrainer #puppytraining #puppytraining
Does your dog love to party, perhaps a little too much? I can help. talkdoggy.com (CCTBS)
I'm not a fan of dog parks for a plethora of reasons, but they have their function for training, mostly on the outside of the fence. Yesterday morning we revisited the terminal marker "okay" (free), stop, and recall, in the presence of high distraction - a German Shepherd that he REALLY wanted to play with on the inside. This is a great exercise to work up to, starting with very minimal distractions indoors. Be sure to use a leash or long lead when practicing outdoors! So proud of this big furball. talkdoggy.com
Dogs and Treadmills
She knows how to walk on a loose leash outdoors very well, so simulating this with "marching" in place (rhythmically) helps her with timing and coordination when first practicing.
Anxious and/or nervous dogs need confidence building, that's where treadmills come in handy; done correctly and gradually, it's fun for everyone! Go, Ava! (Certified dog trainer, serving Central Park) talkdoggy.com
Rambo did 30 minutes this morning while I worked out! That's his new personal record! I can show your dog how to use the treadmill too!

"Leave it!" This is the most important command to teach your dog.
Beginning steps:
1.) Low distraction environment
2.) Medium value resource
3.) High value resource
4.) Increase time and distance
Notes:
▪️Keep your sessions no more than 5 minutes at first.
▪️Repeat each step until your dog has mastered it, then move on to the next.
▪️Never deliver treats from the floor. (You want to be sure your dog knows they are coming directly from you.)
▪️Every dog is different, so sometimes adjustments have to be made.
