Taking care of a sick piggy can be a daunting and emotional experience. Piggies can go downhill very quickly if left untreated and often won't show any symptoms until they are well advanced in their illness. 🤒

Penny the pirate ❤️ came to me already unwell, but did not show any symptoms until I had had her for a week. In the first picture, you can see some common symptoms of a sick guinea pig: fur is dull and puffed up, sleeps most of the time and her eyes are dull. Other symptoms include excessive sneezing, funny and loud breathing, lack of appetite and rapid weight loss, excessive itching, bald spots and crusty skin. 🦠

So, what are we supposed to do when are piggies are sick? Firstly, seek emergency exotic vet care. They would be able to prescribe the necessary medication, along with any critical care supplements and probiotics that you may need to carefully syringe feed. Twice-yearly check-ups are also recommended.

Secondly, patience and love is key. The Penny in the second picture is a year on from her illness.

📢Fleece bedding: why should you go for it?📢

1) It's super easy for spot-cleaning. ❤ A handheld vacuum or a dustpan and brush will get rid of any unwanted hay and faeces in a matter of minutes.

2) It's environmentally friendly! Fleece bedding can simply be thrown into the washing machine and get clean!🌳

❤Let's talk all things bonding! ❤

As you know, guinea pigs are not solitary creatures as they are herd animals and need a friend (or more! We don't judge 😉). Sometimes, this information is not available from the get-go, or our piggy's friend may pass on, so we have to bond our piggie to another.

📢Disclaimer: This is called a PROCESS for a reason, we implore you not to throw two piggies into an enclosure together without the necessary steps. 📢

Let's get started on some tips and tricks:

It's going to be a COLD 🥶week ahead, so here's some tips and tricks for keeping your piggies warm on a budget. Remember, the ideal temperature for guinea pigs is around the 20C zone, and Maltese houses are NOTORIOUS for holding in the cold, so finding ways of keeping our piggies comfy on a budget is key! 👌

1) Big piles of hay: hay is not just a key staple of the piggie diet, but it's also there for playtime, sleep time and most definitely, to keep them warm! 🐹

2) Microwavable hot water bottles: Using a towel to wrap them in, and under strict supervision, this nifty little gadget is a cheap alternative to heating pads usually used for reptiles (which are NOT guinea pig safe).

3) Body heat 🥵: use this time to bond with your piggies and wrap them up in your warm hoody or jumper. Guaranteed they're going to love the warmth! I would recommend using one of our fleece burrows for this just in case of little accidents!

In cold weather 🥶, does anyone else use microwavable hot water bottles for their guinea pigs? Pippa and Penny LOVE their fleece curtain so they tried to drag their hot water bottle into it! 😂

PM us to get a fleece curtain that is customisable and can fit your cage! It makes for a great hideout paired up with one of our basic beds AND is a less bulky alternative for smaller cages!

Let's talk about ENCLOSURES 🏠🐹

We've all fallen into the trap of buying a small cage for our guinea pigs, especially when they're tiny babies. Not to mention, the conflicting information online! 😞

So? What's the correct size for my guinea pig?
Well, your guinea pig needs space to grow, to zoom about super fast 🏃, to eat, to sleep and to play. So the minimum amount of space for one to two guinea pigs would be around 7.5 square feet, or a 120cmx70cm cage. The more piggies you have, the more space you need and boars will need DOUBLE the minimum recommended space as they can be more territorial than sows (although my girls have truly revolutionised the meaning of arguing 🙄).
