HOW I TRIMMED THE DORSAL FIN OF MY MALE BSP BECAUSE IT WAS BENT....
Here’s a detailed instructions I wrote and hopefully it will be helpful to you.
How to Cut/trim Angelfish Fins:
I do not recommend this if (a) you are planning on cutting too close to the body of the fish, (b) cutting the thicker spines of the fins, (c) if it will impair fish from swimming, (d) you are planning on removing more than 2/3 of the fin (just me and no scientific explanation).
Things you’ll need:
Pair of scissors
Clean cloth/paper towel
Alcohol
Gloves
Tank water
Before doing anything, pre-plan on where to cut. Look at the fin and markings. Use the markings to be your guide to figure out where to cut when fish is out our the water.
Prepare a clean flat surface.
Wear Gloves
Clean your scissors with alcohol and let dry.
Wet the cloth with tank water. (Wet but not dripping wet). Spread and Lay it flat on the clean surface.
Before netting the fish, make sure your gloves are clean and dry of alcohol (from cleaning the scissors)
Net the fish carefully and lay it on half side of cloth then drape half over it, leaving just fin exposed.
Restrain the fish lightly just so it don’t flap around/move.
Get scissors, verify the area you want to remove (you can spread the fin if needed).
Now cut just below the bent/damaged area.
Now put fish back in tank and that’s it! Now you can breath.
The fish will be out of the water for less than 30 sec...literally.
Make sure to keep the tank water as clean as possible. Daily water change. This is very important so it grows straight or fin don’t get infected. If defect is genetic, it will not/might not fix the problem.
This is how I did it.
