One of the teachings of permaculture is that you work with what you have got.

We've tried for some years to rid the creek area if black berry. Unsuccessfully. We've cut it back, we've dug it out and even swiped the stumps with spray.

Like a three headed monster it just laps up the rough treatment and grows back stronger.

This year we're working with what we have. We're keeping it in trim but expect to harvest a fine crop from these plants.

It was small but it was mighty.

Against the odds, and after a cool winter we harvested our firsts and only fingerlime.

The foot of the Tararuas not their natural habitat but they're obviously tough and adaptable.
