“This one is just a 3 yr old, he/she dosent need a dental yet.”
I hear stuff like this pretty often from clients, age is more than a number when it comes to dentistry.
Here is a case that I had from the past week on a 3 year old. The arrows are pointing to retained caps (baby teeth.) Typically caps will shed naturally by themselves but occasionally we get some that just hang on longer than they are supposed to! This client brought this filly to me because she had lost about 100 lbs over the span of just 2 weeks, went off of her hay, and began being resistant & moody in her training!
She even had a lower retained cap (not pictured) that had fractured and left several fragments.
It has been been just 3 days since her dental and she is eating away on her hay again and is a much happier horse than before!
Regular dental maintenance is so beneficial for all of your equine partners - young & old. Just because the teeth are out of sight, don’t let them be out of mind! 🦷
