What a year 2024 was thanks to our volunteer board of directors, leadership team, and foster homes as well as adopters and supporters like you. Let's see what 2025 brings!

Looking back at just a handful of the memories from 2024. Tomorrow we will be sharing some of our numbers from the year to help give a better idea of what a year in the life of rescue looks like.

What a difference a week makes! Take a look at the transformation from sad, sick puppies, to puppies that are on the mend and feeling great! All thanks to the wonderful veterinary teams, our volunteer foster families that swiftly jumped into action, and generous donors like you. These 4 pups would truly not be seen here today without all of that, and a whole lot of love!

*although feeling better, these puppies still aren't ready to accept applications, but they'd love admiration from afar and for you to continue educating others that vaccines save lives*

💔 It is with heavy hearts that we share the heartbreaking news that Butterball, our sweet pup who had been hospitalized at Orchard Park since Tuesday with parvovirus, has passed away. Despite the love surrounding him and the incredible efforts of the veterinary team, it wasn’t enough to overcome the challenges he faced.

Butterball battled not only parvovirus but also a severe infestation of intestinal worms. He and his littermates had been treated for worms both before arriving at North Paw and again after their arrival, but the infestation in Butterball's system was too severed, and the damage had already been done.

Parvovirus is an incredibly contagious and often fatal disease that attacks a dog’s intestinal tract and immune system. It spreads easily through contact with infected f***s, contaminated surfaces, or even on shoes and clothing. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are especially vulnerable to the disease, and the virus can survive in the environment for months after contamination. Treatment for parvovirus is intensive, expensive, and, heartbreakingly as is true in Butterball's case, not always successful.

Please let Butterball’s story be a reminder of the vital importance of prevention. Puppies need a series of shots before they are fully vaccinated, and adults need annual boosters to ensure continued protection against parvovirus. Deworming and maintaining monthly preventatives are equally crucial to protect against intestinal parasites and other deadly diseases.

This tragedy was preventable. Please, vaccinate and deworm your pets. Please, stay consistent with boosters. Please, spread awareness. Butterball and his siblings didn’t deserve this heartbreak, and we hope his story serves as a powerful reminder to protect your pets.

Rest easy, sweet Butterball. You were so loved. 💔

We have a pupdate on our parvo positive puppies.

Butterball, currently in Orchard Park Emergency Vet, remains hospitalized. He has received two plasma transfusions but his labs have not yet improved. He’s still fighting for his lifeand it’s still too early to tell if he’s going to make it or not. But we’re all pulling for him and we know you all are, too.

Clyde was the puppy first hospitalized at Rochester Emergency Veterinary Services (REVS). He had antibody treatments, was catheterized, and required an ng tube for nutrients. He was discharged Christmas night and is currently doing well at home with his foster family.

Bonnie was an outpatient at REVS. She received her antibody treatment as well as other medications and continues doing well in her foster home.

Hercules was the second of our pups to be hospitalized at REVS this week. Like Bonnie and Clyde he received the works, including antibody treatments, and was well enough to discharged to his foster earlier this evening.

Mocha was seen at REVS yesterday but despite testing positive, she didn't require antibodies and has remained at home with her foster family giving her the necessary medications to treat her symptoms.

And finally our 6th puppy, Fiyero, continues dancing through life without a single symptom. His foster family, along with everyone else, hopes he stays that way!

So, while things don’t look too dire for most of our puppies, parvo can be a very tricky illness. Any of the 4 symptomatic pups at home could take a turn for the worse. And Butterball remains touch and go in the hospital being monitored by veterinary staff. The other 4 sick puppies are being monitored closely, 24/7, by their devoted fosters who are worried sick (as are all of us here at North Paw).

None of these sick babies would have had a chance without the amazing staff at REVS (who worked on Christmas Day, seeing 23 dogs including our 3 pups) and the hospital in Orchard Park. And, of course, none of this could happen without our dedicated fosters and our supporters who have helped us help these puppies and so many others like them.

We hope to be back with better news on Butterball tomorrow, but for now we ask for continued thoughts for him and all of the pups.

Like everyone else, none of us here at North Paw wanted to spend our holidays at the doctor....but some of our newest dogs are in need of a holiday miracle and so we're doing whatever we can. Even at Christmas we're prepared to spring into action to do what's needed for the dogs in our care.

The adorable puppies we just introduced you to on Monday need medical intervention. 3 of them are already sick with Parvo and the other 3 are unfortunately likely to become sick as well. Three of our volunteer foster families gave up their Christmas Eve plans to get these pups to the emergency care that they need. Three of our volunteer families gave up their holiday traditions to save an innocent life. Three of our volunteer foster families did what we do every day in rescue, and chose compassion yesterday. Today, we ask you to choose compassion too.

In the short amount of time we've had these puppies in our care those 3 have already racked up over $12,000 in veterinary bills. 1 is hospitalized in Orchard Park, another at Rochester Emergency Veterinary Services, and 1 was released for outpatient care after receiving antibody treatment.

We understand that the pictures we posted were adorable and many of you were interested in these puppies. Who wouldn't want to meet them? But please understand that when we say no inquiries yet we have reasons for it. Reasons like the puppies needing a health hold. Reasons like taking every precaution to avoid this deadly disease and still ending up with sick puppies fighting for their lives.

For now we ask for all of the positive thoughts you have to spare. And if you have a few bucks to send their way we would be forever grateful. Today many of us are celebrating with our families, and many of us are waiting for the phone to ring with information about our sick pups.

Yogi here is a 4 month old goldendoodle. He found himself in need of rescue when his puppy antics were too much for his original owners. He's now thriving in his foster home and is ready to find a home with patience and love to help him learn to be the best dood in town. Bad weather and busy holidays don’t stop the mission of rescue. Yesterday, a team of incredible volunteer transporters spent the morning and early afternoon driving to multiple puppy mills, bringing 25 dogs to freedom. These dogs made their way to the vet for care before heading to two stops in Western New York, where they were safely handed over to their respective rescues.

Here at North Paw Rescue, two of our volunteers drove to Buffalo to pick up three of these deserving dogs, bringing them back to Rochester to start their foster home journeys. Once in Rochester, at 10pm and degrees in the teens, the three volunteer foster homes stepped in to greet them and ensure their smooth transition into loving foster care.

We’re endlessly grateful to our North Paw team and the extended rescue family who work tirelessly to give dogs a chance at a better life. It takes a village to make freedom rides happen, and together, we’re changing lives—day in and day out. As we speak, six more dogs are making their way to North Paw.

*None of these dogs are accepting applications yet*

$5 Friday: Meet Kriya 💕

Kriya is a merle French Bulldog who, despite her stunning coat, is a heartbreaking example of the devastating consequences of unethical breeding. Merle Frenchies are often born with congenital issues like cleft palates and cleft lips because breeders prioritize "perfect" appearances over the health and well-being of these innocent lives.

For Kriya and many puppies like her, this meant she couldn’t stay with her mom because nursing could have been fatal. Now, she needs round-the-clock care—via tube feeding by her foster mom, to ensure she stays healthy and gains weight. Her fight for survival is a tough one, but with your help, we’re determined to give her the best chance at life.

We’re asking for just $5 this Friday to help support Kriya and other puppies and dogs in our care. If you have a little extra to spare this holiday season, your generosity can make an even bigger impact, helping provide the specialized care, food, and medical attention these vulnerable dogs so desperately need.

Let’s show Kriya and others like her that love and compassion can triumph over greed and neglect.
