It is with deep sadness that we share of Todd's passing. He passed last night with his foster family due to a seizure that he just could not handle. Todd was insanely loved by his family and he was spoiled in all of the ways that he deserved💕 Thank you Karen and family for giving him a loving home and letting him be his spicy, playful self❤️

OC Pom Rescue has taken in 11 dogs in the last two weeks because of the incredible fosters and transporters who stepped up to get these pups out of bad situations. On average, it costs anywhere between $1,000 to $2,000 to do basic vetting for each dog in our care. Those adoption fees, they help us recuperate some cost, but they come nowhere near what we spend on each dog.

This is why we need YOUR help in sponsoring the vetting for the following dogs.

Calypso was dumped in an alleyway as a puppy. Why would someone do this? Because she has a birth defect in her heart that if it isn't fixed, she will be dead in 3-6 months. This is a fixable issue, but it requires an expensive heart surgery.

Poisedon, Pegasus, and two other dogs were dumped at the North Central LA shelter by their owner and set to be euthanized that day. The other two were euthanized immediately and thankfully a lifesaving coordinator, Jackie, was able to save Poisedon and Pegasus by holding them while a transporter raced to the shelter. These dogs have atrophied legs, bent spines, collapsed tracheas, and scars from tick and flea infestations. They are suffering from neglect which only lifesaving vetting can alleviate.

Daphne was genuinely thrown in the street. She is blind and deaf, so if the good samaritan, Heli, had not scooped her up...well, I don't think I need to spell that out for you. Her skin was bright pink and covered in scabs and mucus. She has a painful skin infection, uterine infection, ear infections, and her one remaining eye is also infected. A dog can only handle so much pain.

Hera has a whole host of heart problems that are killing her. She is presumed to not make it past this year, and her family of 12 years decided that they did not want to comfort and love her for the rest of her life. Her foster mom, Alexis, will instead.

Ernest Hemingway was dumped at a shelter with a chest wound, severe flea dermatitis, and a mouth infection. When was the last time he visited the vet? It couldn't have been within the last several years. He is afraid and in so much pain that he has repeatedly bitten his foster mom. Only a dog who has seen the worst can be capable of this.

Welcome to Daphne for joining OC Pom Rescue's hospice care!!❤️ Daphne's journey began when she was abandoned by her previous owner and rescued by a kind-hearted individual who brought her to OC Pom Rescue. She is visually impaired with only one eye, and she is completely deaf, spending much of her time sleeping. Despite these hardships, Daphne is incredibly gentle and loving.

To ensure her safety, Daphne wears a halo to prevent any accidental bumps. She has been receiving cytopoint injections to alleviate skin inflammation and itching, as well as antibiotics and eye ointment to treat infections. Her entire body, all six pounds, was raging red, flaky, and swollen. The neglect she endured over time is sadly apparent, but our focus now is to provide her with comfort and care for the remainder of her life.

Recently, Daphne underwent surgery revealing a myometra infection in her uterus, a consequence of not being spayed earlier. She is now on medication and has successfully undergone the spaying procedure. Once fully recovered, discussions will proceed regarding the removal of her non-functioning eye and treatment for a hernia.

Despite her challenges, Daphne's spirit shines through, and she continues to receive love and support at OC Pom Rescue, where we are dedicated to ensuring she experiences comfort and compassion every day. Thank you Heli for saving Daphne and for fostering her🦋✨

If you’re anyone like me, you hear DIY homemade dog food and you may run in the opposite direction. Doesn’t it take forever? I would rather spend the extra money for convenience. What if I mess it up and they end up malnourished?

In truth, DIY homemade fresh dog food can actually be simple.

You don’t need to overcomplicate things with doing Ph.d. level research on what is best for your dog’s needs to be able to make the most nutritious meals for your dog. Just Food for Dogs has an easy-to-use guide for purchasing ingredients and making the recipe that can last you for months.

According to the Just Food for Dog’s website, they boast that “We make cooking at home for your dog easy! You supply the whole-food ingredients, we supply the recipe and shopping guide, the nutritionally balanced nutrient blend, and easy-to-follow cooking instructions.”

The website offers 6 dog food recipes to choose from: chicken and rice, beef and potato, turkey and macaroni, fish and potato, lamb and brown rice, and venison and squash.

Speaking from experience, I would recommend trying the macaroni and turkey recipe first if this is your first time DIYing food or if this is your dog’s first time having fresh food. My dogs and foster dogs seem to have the best transition with turkey and macaroni, but I have heard of success with other fosters in using the chicken and rice recipe first. Both are easy to digest and offer the best nutrients for adult dogs.

For those who are more experienced and looking for something new, the fish recipe is great for dogs trying to lose weight and the lamb recipe is good for picky eaters.

Does my Dog Need to Take Probiotics to be Healthy?🦋🕊️ There is a plethora of products out there that are marketed as providing health benefits, but be it from experience or looking at active ingredients, they don’t actually do anything for your dog’s health. Some may argue that probiotics fall into this category and that if you just feed your dog the right food, they won’t need additional supplements or products.

While this may be true in certain circumstances, in others, dogs would greatly benefit from the addition of probiotics into their diet. Probiotics are microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast, that can aid digestion, support immune system function, and contribute to skin and coat health. In my experience fostering numerous dogs, some come to me malnourished and scared as heck. Probiotics have helped calm their stomachs and improved their digestion of proper meals. Food change, especially in scary circumstances, can lead to runny stools, and in consequence, picky eaters. With the help of probiotics, their stomachs settle and they have better appetites.
