Our companions come into our lives for only a short time making the goodbye too quick. They are here for only a small part of our lives but for them we are their whole life.

This is what we all hope to see when our time comes. We keep our companions in our hearts so when the next chapter comes they are waiting for us to continue the chapter they started.

Q: What can you do the night before your appointment?
A: You can spoil your companion by treating them to their favorite food, giving them extra love, taking photos, go for a walk if able, and just spending that quality time with them.

Q: How do I prepare for in-home euthanasia?
A: You can focus on your companion by giving extra love, a soft bed with potty pads if needed. Notify your primary veterinarian. Playing music during the procedure can sometimes be soothing as well as low light levels.

Q: Should you continue medications?
A: We always say yes continue medications to keep your baby as comfortable as possible before and during the procedure.

Q: Will my pet fall asleep within 5-20 minutes of receiving the sedative drugs?
A: Most pets will fall asleep within 5-20 minutes of receiving one dose of the sedative drugs. If your pet is taking longer than this to fully relax, they may require more medication or a different medication.

Q: Is my companion aware after sedation?
A: Most companions slip into a deep sleep within minutes of the first injection of a sedative/pain medication.

Every animal that comes into our lives teaches us a new lesson. Love, patience, acceptance, and so much more. The biggest lesson sometimes is how to cope with loss and to grieve fully.

Here at Sunset Vets we know how hard it is to walk through life after loss. Knowing that the paw prints will always be on your heart makes the walk a little less hard.

It is ok to not be ok after the loss of a pet. It is truly life altering to have an immediate change of your daily routine. The pain of vacuuming up their last bit of fur is brutal. The little things you didn't even know were significant stand out like a bright light. Therapy is healthy in these moments. Reach out to us if you need to connect with a therapist that understands.

No two dogs are the same, but your heart is capable of loving in different ways. Take your time, recover, but don't push away the desire to have another pet if that day comes along.

If you have a senior dog, we highly advise doing preventative screens on them! You never know if you'll catch early signs of kidney disease, splenic tumors or an enlarging heart etc. These things can be managed if found quick enough. All too frequently these diseases are caught in the emergency room when it is too late. There is never a guarantee with life, but these diagnostics just might give you a little more time with your baby!

One of the questions I always ask my clients is "are you ready". I know the answer to the question is no. No one can be ready for this moment. I remind everyone of this thought. It only hurts this bad because it was that good.
