These three micro monsters are somehow still available. As you can see, they are clearly unhandled, untamed, and vicious.
A good reminder of why you should acquire animals from either reputable rescues or responsible breeders. This is from a local Petco; the rat is clearly ill and covered in its own diarrhea (and while they originate from the same source, these rats are being sold as pets rather than feeders). This also must have been going on longer than just this day, as there is dried diarrhea tracked all over the enclosure. A former employee of this particular Petco also told me that they fed one of their floor gerbils to a picky snake after it failed to sell in the expected time. Companies like Petco and Petsmart vocalize their support for animal welfare while dead fish float in their display tanks. The animals do not come from ethical breeders (no caring breeder would ever sell to a chain pet store). Animal welfare is grossly compromised as is animal health, as clearly seen here. Don't support the industry. Look for rescues or ethical breeders who give their animals sufficient space, good nutrition, ample enrichment, and adequate medical care--and also someone who screens homes and cares where their offspring end up!
Memories of Khalil's 10/30/20 litter
Regardless of the species, brothers and sisters don't always get along!

Even before their eyes open, gerbil babies are active and inquisitive. After their eyes open...it's game over. Nothing but running, digging, and bothering mom.

Poor, long-suffering Khalil was an excellent mother to her first litter, even though they were pretty demanding.

Igor finally got semi-competent at the saucer, but not without a few mishaps.
