Chito here! I had my recheck today! It got pushed back a week due to the snowpocalypse. I got my brace off!!!! Then they gave me some meds that made me sleepy and took radiographs to check out my surgical site. No more brace for me, but I’m still on rest for the next 6 weeks with gradual return to activity thereafter. I’m so happy! Kisses and tail wags to everyone!

I hope everyone is staying warm and safe through this weather!

Well, I was out of my splint for a few moments and had another replaced. I look so fabulous in green! I’ve gotten so used to the splint it doesn’t bother me anymore, however I’m ready for my recheck radiographs. Once Dr. B confirms I healed enough I can start being a playful puppy again! Keep your paws crossed for me at my next recheck!

Chito here. I would like to introduce to you Aspen, a lovely young Aussie pup, that has been in pain just like I was. 😞. Her mom and dad took her to Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists for help. Aspen came to my foster moms department, where she was diagnosed with an AA lux as well. As we know, AA subluxation SUCKS. Aspen now has a brace just like I had, and has surgery this coming week with the AMAZING Dr. Bubenik that did my surgery! I am SO happy for her! As y’all know, this surgery is quite pricy. 😬. I know Aspen’s dad and mom would appreciate ANY help they could get. If you have a few dollars to give, please donate to Aspen’s surgery. Kisses and tail wags!!!!

J here. Y’all, I apologize for not keeping everyone posted. Chito had surgery this past Tuesday, 1/5/2021. He did fantastic through his procedure and got to come home the following day! I cannot say enough great things about Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists surgery team, and the amazing Dr. Bubenik. He has been doing phenominal since. He wants to run and play as he actually feels like a puppy for the first time! Even the morning after surgery he was wagging his tail and just as happy as could be (video to follow of him ~14 hrs post op as it won’t let me post it with pics). I appreciate all of you for following his story. ❤️❤️❤️

J here. Yes, I look like heck, so filters for the win! However, Chito shines in every photo and aspect. His surgery day is TOMORROW! This foster has definitely been a roller coaster of emotions. He has THE BEST surgeon and team tomorrow, and I have the upmost faith that if anyone can fix him, it’s them. We are still short of our goal, however he NEEDS this surgery to give him back the quality of life he deserves. No amount is too small. I’ll keep y’all updated tomorrow. ❤️❤️❤️

Hi everyone! Today at J’s work they tried to place another bandage, but again, I got out of it. So Dr. Davis and Dani (Isn’t his sweater PAWSOME?!) grabbed a bunch of materials and made me a neck brace! They are pretty amazing!

Hi! Chito here. J started calling me Houdini because I managed to get my head out of 3 bandages yesterday. When this happens it does not support my luxation. The neurologist told us at the office yesterday after placing my second one that if it slips to cut it off and keep me strictly in the crate until Monday when I go back to work with J and can get a new one. Well anyway, yeah... I got my head out of it... So J did what the doctor said, however even with my pain meds it hurt SO bad and I started to scream and cry. J’s best friend Aunt Momo came over last night to help me and placed a new bandage as she knows how. I felt SO much better with it on and all my pain went away! Buuuut, then I then managed to get out of that one too... 😬. I know the splint and bandage help me, but it is annoying to wear. I really REALLY hope I can get surgery soon so I don’t have to wear these anymore and be a normal puppy again. 🙏🙏🙏

She gave in to me and my adorableness. 😏. I was shocked to see our food looked very similar! Btw, being syringed water was awkward in the beginning, but I’m figuring it out! J says I can’t get my restrictive device (aka splint) wet or dirty, as not to cause skin yuckies.

J was trying to eat but I wanted to be held. A complaint was made to the management of this establishment.

Hi! J here, Chito’s foster mom. He said he was woozy from his meds, as well as only being 4 months old and unable to read. This is directly transcribed from his discharge summary from SLVS.

Diagnostics:
Cervical radiographs: On the neutral angle lateral views of the cervical vertebral column, there is normal alingment of C1 and C2. On flexed lateral view, there is increased distance between the dorsal lamina of the atlas and the spinous process of the axis with dorsal angulation of the dens within the spinal canal. No further osseous lesions are noted. The dens appears present.

Conclusions: Atlanto-axial subluxation

Diagnosis: Atlanto-axial subluxation

Assessment: Atlantoaxial instability is an uncommon condition of dogs in which there is abnormal movement in the neck, between the atlas (first cervical vertebra) and axis (second vertebra). This instability allows abnormal bending between the two bones, which causes compression of the spinal cord. The severity of the injury to the spinal cord depends both on the amount of pressure, and the duration of the condition. There are two causes for the instability, trauma and birth abnormalities. Traumatic instability occurs after forceful flexion of the head. This form of the instability can occur in any breed, at any age. Certain birth defects can predispose this instability to occur with a very small amount of trauma (i.e. jumping off the couch, being jumped on by another dog). These abnormalities include a missing or malformed dens, or lack of normal attachments between the two vertebrae. An absent or smaller dens is the most common predisposing cause. This condition is seen mainly in small breed dogs, like Chito. Dogs with congenital abnormalities usually show clinical signs at less than one year of age.

Treatment may be conservative splinting or surgical. The theory behind the non- surgical approach is an attempt to stabilize the cervical vertebral column in a mildly extended position, allowing the body to build a fibrous connective tissue around the atlanto-axial joint over four to eight weeks. Complications can occur following splint application. Periodic rechecks and bandage changes are required. If the bandage becomes wet, it might tighten or irritate the skin and cause complications. While many cases of AA instability can improve with splinting, there remains a chance of relapse and the possible need for surgical stabilization at another time. Crate rest is recommended for several weeks. This is typically recommended in cases of mild clinical signs, very young animals or with clients unable to afford surgical stabilization.

Surgery is usually recommended over conservative treatment because of the possibility of recurrence and further spinal cord damage. Goals of surgery are to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, and permanently stabilize the joint. There are potential complications associated with surgery: implant failure, inadequate spinal alignment or rarely spinal cord damage leading to acute respiratory arrest/death.

Hi! My name is Chito and I am 4 months old and 2.9 pounds. I’ve been told I am a Chihuahua Mix but I think of myself as AWESOME!

I made a page for myself for two reasons. To share my adorableness with the world, and because I’m in need of some help.

I was seen at Sugar Land Veterninary Specialists on 12/18/2020 because I was SO painful. I couldn’t move without crying and I couldn’t eat because the pain was so bad. I had spells where I couldn’t walk AT ALL (talk about scary!) and when I could my legs wouldn’t do what I wanted them to do.

The wonderful Dr. Davis with the Neurology section examined me and found the pain was coming from my neck. I got some medicine to take the pain away and that made me super sleepy. I don’t remember much but what looked like people in big suits with kitchen mitts on and hearing clicking noises.

I was told later I have what is called an atlanto-axial subluxation. I will leave it to my foster mom, J, to explain full, but from what I understood my spine is misaligned and unstable. They said it’s bad, but there is a surgery that could fix it.

I was put in a restrictive device that they called a “splint.” They said it would stabilize my neck until I can get surgery. I feel a lot better now with it on and the medications which Dr. Davis prescribed, but this is just a temporary fix.

I REALLY need surgery. I want to be a puppy again. I want to run an to play. I want to chew on thing (that I’m probably not supposed to). I want to have my life back and be a pain free ME again!

My foster, J, is taking the phone away from me now. Kisses and tail wags to you all! Thank you for reading my story, and I hope you follow me!

Hi! J here. I’ve fostered more babies that I can count, and this boy is so special. He wags his tail through the pain. If you could even spare a dollar to help him, no amount it too small. Let’s get him the quality of life back that he deserves for Christmas. ❤️❤️❤️
