As your student begins their college journey, we want to offer a few safety tips. With late-night study sessions, new friendships, and unforgettable experiences on the horizon, this chapter is full of exciting opportunities. However, it’s crucial to stay mindful of their surroundings, especially if this is their first time away from home.
1. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
Always be mindful of your environment, especially when walking alone at night. Avoid distractions like looking at your phone and stay alert.
2. Use Campus Security Services
Utilize campus es**rt services, emergency phones, and shuttle services provided by the college, particularly if you’re moving around campus late at night.
3. Secure Your Belongings
Always lock your dorm room, apartment, and car. Don’t leave personal belongings unattended, especially in public areas like libraries or cafeterias.
4. Be Careful with Social Media
Avoid sharing your location in real-time on social media. Be mindful of the personal information you share online.
5. Know the Emergency Procedures
Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures of your college. Know the locations of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits.
6. Travel in Groups
Whenever possible, travel with friends, especially during nighttime. There’s safety in numbers.
7. Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
8. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy
Have emergency contacts readily available

Just when you think you've seen it all, scammers come up with another scam. The latest scheme? Quishing—a sneaky tactic where crooks use QR codes to try and steal your personal information or infect your device with malware.
Here's How Quishing Works:
Scammers embed malicious links in QR codes, which they then send to you via email, text messages, or even print out on flyers or business cards.
When you scan the QR code with your phone, it could direct you to a fake website that looks legitimate, asking for your passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive info. Or worse, it could start downloading harmful software onto your device.
How to Protect Yourself:
Be Wary of QR Codes: If you don’t know the source or it seems suspicious, don’t scan it.
Double-Check URLs: After scanning a QR code, always check the website address before entering any information. If something looks off, don’t proceed.
Stay Informed and Vigilant: Scammers are always coming up with new tricks, so it’s important to stay on your toes and keep your security software up to date.
It's maddening that we have to deal with these kinds of threats, and even more frustrating that these crooks won’t put their efforts into honest work. Stay safe out there, and let’s continue to outsmart these scammers by staying informed and cautious!
