Latrodectus pallidus (white widow spider) is a species of the medically important widow spiders found in Northeastern Africa, as well as Western and Central Asia. They inhabit the steppe and desert regions of these areas, making their retreats in the sparse shrubbery. In contrast to most other species in the genus, and as their common name suggests, their body coloration is beige-white.

Latrodectus bishopi is a unique species of widow spider native to central and southern Florida scrubland habitat, preferring to build their retreats in palmetto palms almost exclusively. Sadly, this beautiful species is threatened throughout their entire range due to development and poor management of their preferred habitat type, with only a handful of areas still hosting known populations.

We found multiple of these potentially undescribed Platerodrilus sp. (trilobite beetle) specimens while in Borneo. Females of the genus are neotenic, meaning they retain their larval form even when mature. Males, however, look more like what we traditionally think of when thinking of a 'beetle.' Cyriopagopus schmidti (Chinese golden earth tiger tarantula)
A VERY EXCITING FIND! A likely new species of Selenocosmiinae and potentially a new genus for Sabah.
On our last night in the highlands, while herping, Ziqian spotted this female Selenocosmiinae tarantula about 1 meter off the ground outside of a tree hollow burrow in the highlands of Sabah at ~1500 m asl (~5,000 feet). As is typically the case, the spider was very photosensitive and immediately retreated into its burrow in the tree when confronted with the light from our flashlights. I immediately recognized it as something significant due to the location, habitat type, and cursory examination of the live specimen before it retreated. So I attempted to get it out of the burrow, which I eventually succeeded.
There is only one known Selenocosmiinae described from the Sabah highlands, Phlogiellus pelidnus, and it is only known from the type locality 85 km away. Correspondence with the authors of the description of that species and the revision of the subfamily Selenocosmiinae confirmed my suspicions that this animal was, in fact, most likely an undescribed species of Selenocosmiinae, possibly from the genus Selenocosmia, the first potential example of that genus from Sabah. There is only one described species of Selenocosmia known to occur on the island, Selenocosmia barensteinerae, from Indonesian Borneo, but none from Malaysian Borneo. However, due to the difficulty in identifying Selenocosmiinae, dissection and a complete examination of the specimen would need to be done to confirm the suspicion that it is, in fact, a new species. Super cool sighting!

I was super excited to see multiple of these guys in the lowlands of Borneo. Unfortunately, this was the only species we came across. This family gets a lot of hate because multiple species have become invasive worldwide, likely due to trade in plant material. However, I think they are really neat animals. In the micro world, they are apex predators in their own right, and many species can be incredibly brightly colored and ornamental.

Sason sundaicum (Sundaica brush-footed trapdoor spider)
This is a small mygalomorph spider native to Thailand and Malaysia. They belong to the family Barychelidae, or brush-footed trap door spiders, so named because of their well-developed scopulae, tufted tarsal claws, and trap-constructing behavior. Their scopulae and tufted tarsal claws allow them to climb smooth surfaces like glass, similar to tarantulas. The Barychelidae are the most closely related family to tarantulas evolutionarily.
This species is associated with coastal areas and builds arboreal traps similar to Typhochlaena sp.

I was surprised to find this girl on eggs about a month ago. I assumed the eggs were likely infertile because I have had her for three years, and she was pretty small when I acquired her. After 2 weeks, she ended up eating them, like I expected she eventually would since the assumption was they were infertile. Still, it was cool to see her doing her motherly duties taking care of the eggs for a little while. One of our mature female Poecilotheria striata out for a stroll after a photo shoot. Poecilotheria is one of the most well-liked genera in the hobby, and we keep all 14 of the hobby species. Here is a short video of some of the super cool animals we got to see in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: Unique-looking rare millipedes, a bearcat, various species of snake, a possibly undescribed Phormingochilus species (sadly didn't get a decent photo of the adult), cockroaches that roll into a ball, and so much more! We can't wait to return and find more undescribed endemic invertebrates there. There are so many species unknown to science in Borneo.
