Grammostola pulchra (Brazilian black tarantula) gets all the love, but I think this species, Grammostola iheringi (Entre Rios tarantula), is better. They are larger, faster growing, and better looking, in my opinion. This is probably one of my favorite diplurid species, though I wish they kept their younger coloration with the more obvious tiger striping on the abdomen. I was surprised to find this girl on eggs about a month ago. I assumed the eggs were likely infertile because I have had her for three years, and she was pretty small when I acquired her. After 2 weeks, she ended up eating them, like I expected she eventually would since the assumption was they were infertile. Still, it was cool to see her doing her motherly duties taking care of the eggs for a little while. Here is a short video of some of the super cool animals we got to see in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: Unique-looking rare millipedes, a bearcat, various species of snake, a possibly undescribed Phormingochilus species (sadly didn't get a decent photo of the adult), cockroaches that roll into a ball, and so much more! We can't wait to return and find more undescribed endemic invertebrates there. There are so many species unknown to science in Borneo.
