Insulin Alert from the Humane Society of Louisiana: What happens when you eat an entire pint of chocolate chip ice cream or look at the photos of a joey sitting in a hammock? For us, it's about the same experience. It's called 'sweetness overload'. A member donated some small hammocks to us, and we mailed them to our good friend JenniLynn Johnson, a licensed opossum rehabber.

Much like receiving a gallon of ice cream, the gift was well received.

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana: Good morning! We thank you for all your support throughout the year. Because of you, we're able to help animals in virtually every corner of our state. Today, instead of our weekly $5.00 Friday Fundraiser, we'd love for you to donate to our GiveNOLA DAY fundraiser (sorry, $10 minimum.)

Your donations allow us to operate three sanctuaries and manage our new headquarters in Gretna. They also allow us to help hundreds of criminally abused animals, lobby at the local and state levels, and reach thousands of people through our social media channels each week.

Because of you, we're able to do so much!

GiveNOLA Day, an initiative of the Greater New Orleans Foundation, is a one-day online giving event. For 24 hours, everyone who loves our region can support their favorite local causes by donating to one or more of 700+ participating nonprofit organizations.

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana: Everyone deserves a chance to live and enjoy life, especially the "least of these," which happens to be one of our favorite biblical verses (Matthew 25:40).

One of our go-to wildlife transporters, Mandy Rice, is leaving now to pick up an injured baby turtle that was hit by a moving vehicle. She'll deliver it to our friends at Clearwater Wildlife Sanctuary.

Care to help? Please donate to us at [email protected] or register to be one of our volunteer wildlife transporters. Send

News from the Humane Society of Louisiana: Our beloved Save the Black Bear license plate will no longer help the black bear if changes to a bill are enacted. More than 25 years ago, with the help of then-Senator Foster Campbell, our Humane Society drafted and passed a bill that created the Save the Black Bear license plate. At the time, the Louisiana black bear, our state mammal, was listed as threatened, and hunting it was prohibited. The proceeds from the sale of each plate would go toward protecting the habitat of black bears and supporting non-game activities.

This year, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries established a 10-bear hunting season beginning in December. In the meantime, Louisiana Representative Neil Riser, an avid big game hunter, has introduced legislation, House Bill 684, that strikes specific language from our original bill and directs the proceeds to the Conservation Fund, which supports pro-hunting initiatives.

To defeat this bill, please call the Senate Committee on Natural Resources members and urge them to vote against the passage of HB 684. You can read the bill here: https://www.legis.la.gov/legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=1358968

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana:

Thank you, wildlife rescuers, transporters, and licensed rehabbers. Our state offers few resources to help injured, displaced, or orphaned wildlife. Much of the work to save and help injured animals falls on the shoulders of volunteers and a few big-hearted licensed wildlife rehabbers and centers. Even getting an injured animal from point A to B requires a lot of different people, skills, and willingness to help.

A warehouse worker contacted Acadiana Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation, Inc. after noticing a hawk had been in their warehouse for about a week. They didn't think the hawk had much to eat or drink. Acadiana reached out to Amanda Harcrow-Nerdmomnola, a licensed rehabber, who was able to catch the hawk and bring it home. LSU Vet Teaching School, which treats injured wildlife, agreed to take it, but not until the next morning.

We contacted a volunteer who agreed to pick up the hawk from Amanda's home at 8 am and deliver it to the center by 10 am. Because so few people are involved in this vocation, treating one injured hawk requires enormous logistical support and coordination.
You can help by becoming a wildlife rehabber. To learn how, please visit https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/wildlife-rehab-permit-and-basic-skills-course.

We will soon announce our inaugural Wildlife Rehabbers Appreciation Week to bring attention to this vocation and industry. During the week, we'll issue several press releases inviting people to get involved, get permitted, or donate to their local rehab center or licensed individual.

During this legislative session, we also, with the help of State Representative Jacob Braud (R—District 105), introduced House Bill 641, which created a new special license plate that read "Support our Wildlife Rehabbers." Proceeds from the sale of these plates would support licensed rehabilitators.

You can donate on Paypal at [email protected] or under "donate" at www.humanela.org to support these efforts.

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana: Here's the perfect way to learn more about and appreciate the Louisiana black bear - attend the upcoming Bayou Teche Black Bear Festival, held Saturday, April 15th, in Franklin, in St. Mary Parish. Even though our state has chosen to open up a 10-limit black bear hunting season this year, we can still support efforts to preserve and appreciate this beautiful creature.

Dear Black Bear Advocates,

Thank you for signing our Stop the Louisiana Black Bear Hunt. We collected more than 10,000 signatures, and our petition, which closed on February 5th, was sent to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and will be included in its public comment registry.

The hunt, regrettably, despite our objections, is scheduled to take place this December. The Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries will distribute 10 hunting licenses through a lottery system and allow ten bears to be shot and killed (they say the hunt will be limited to larger males).

However, our work to advocate for the bears will continue. We plan to reach out to the four federally recognized Native American tribes in Louisiana and learn what they know about the black bear. The black bear likely appears in their art, in their folktales, and beliefs. We plan to share what we learn on our social media platform and through timely press releases and news conferences.

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana: We're just a few hundred short of reaching our goal of 10,000 signatures on our Stop the Louisiana Black Bear Hunt petition. We are encouraging our state to use the BearWise program that was developed and remains in use in Florida. Florida's Wildlife and Fisheries Commission educates its residents on steps to take to minimize and reduce bear-human contact, thereby reducing the need to kill bears; its proven to be highly effective.

Dear Friends,

We need your help to stop the proposed Louisiana black bear hunt. For the first time in decades, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has filed a Notice of Intent to resume bear hunting, with up to 10 bear killed in December of this year.

We have been working almost every day to bring attention to this tragedy and have given interviews to a dozen major new outlets, including the Morning Advocate, US News, Louisiana Public Radio Network, and WDSU to name a few. You can help by signing our petition and by emailing your concerns and opposition to this proposed hunt to John Hanks, Large Omnivore Program Manager at Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, at [email protected].

Update from the Humane Society of Louisiana: The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries recently adopted and published its Notice of Intent to open a hunting season for the once-threatened Louisiana black bear in December of this year. Florida, which also has its own black bear population, has created its own non-lethal program called the BearWise Program that encourages the co-existence with bears with pro-active steps one can take to minimize human/bear contact. We strongly favor
that approach, which instills respect and appreciation for our large omnivores.
