McKenna's Mustang Challenge Paisley was a great experience in 2020, so I'm participating in the 2022 Teens and Oregon Mustang program again.

I would love for you to follow along on my journey to befriend, gentle, and train one of Oregon's beautiful wild Mustangs!

Hi guys. I know I haven’t posted in a while. I just wanted to give everyone an update.

I still have not gotten a halter on him unfortunately. He has let me pet him a bit. And I have been able to run down his face, neck, belly, and butt with a whip. But I haven’t been able to get that far with my hands yet. He is showing a few signs of aggression, but that is quickly remedied with round-penning.

I just wanted to let everyone know, I will be adopting him out of the challenge. And then I will be selling him at the end of September with the hope of at least getting him halter broke by then. So if you are interested, please leave a comment or message me through the Mustang Challenge page. I would really love for him to go to a good home. I will be starting school again at the end of September and I will not have the time he needs or deserves. So please message me, or tag other people/send them the info on him if you are interested. His price will be based on how far I get with him. But it will not be expensive at all.

I hope he can go to a really good home. Also I just wanted to say one more time, he WILL NOT be available through the auction since I am adopting him and then re-selling him privately. So it is very important that anyone interested gets ahold of me for information.

Thank you guys so much!

Haven’t posted in a while cause I haven’t made much progress.

But yesterday we took a huge step. I was able to rub his face and neck and a bit of his shoulder with the handy whip. Hoping to get his tag off in the next week.

I have been trying this the last few days. Just hanging a whip over his back and waiting for him to settle, then taking it off or wiggling it to simulate petting. I’m not sure how helpful it is, but I feel like I’m making slow progress.

After about 20 minutes of this I got him down to a walk and stop while keeping it on and moving it around on him.

Well, Mr. Man is getting a bit of a break (not that he needs it) because I am at OHSET State with Alyssa.

She has been using my heart horse Oakley for OHSET this year and qualified for state in Working Rancher, Working Pairs, Sorting, and Western Equitation.

I will be back to work with the demon spawn on Monday!

Day 4: Current status...

Welp. Nothing to exciting today. This is the most I’ve gotten from him, a few steps toward me and just a lot of snorting. Nothing too aggressive from him since the first day. This guy is definitely making me work for it.

Day 3: Worked on getting him to start following me and wanting to be curious about me.

Day 2: Just a little update.

Still no touch yet. I have been met with some defensive aggression when I get to close. But it gets shut down with round penning and me controlling his body and movements.

It’s gonna be tough with this guy, but I’m not giving up yet.

Also he has discovered his shelter and has been eating and settling very nicely.

This big gelding looks like he will be a handful. But I am so exited. If you guys have any name suggestions, drop them in the comments

Hey everyone. Long time no post. I am happy to announce that I will be doing the Teens and Oregon Mustangs Challenge again this year.

I have already submitted my picks for a mustang and I will be picking it up at the beginning of May.

The Mustang challenge with Paisley taught me so much and I am so excited to see what I learn this time.

These are the 4 geldings I put in to draw from.

Hey everybody!

I know I haven’t posted in a while. I wanted to give you an update on the competition. After a long day, and many struggles, Paisley and I took 4th overall in our age group!

I am so proud of how she handled the situations that were presented. We had some issues in the show ring, but we were able to work through them and show off what we could do. I also paid her adoption fee and she is officially mine!

Thank you to everybody who has helped me and supported me along the way. Especially Rosie Pridey, Stacey Riggs, and Carey Cathey Cutting Horses for supporting me and sharing your knowledge with the me.

Hey guys! Bidding for this years Mustangs is now open! There are some amazing horses coming from some really hard working trainers.

Congratulations to all the trainers who did the competition. I can’t wait to meet the horses at the show! 😁

Day 71: Hey guys!! I know I haven’t posted in a while. Things have been a bit crazy in the Neldner family.

Paisley has been doing very well. She and I have a very strong bond that keeps growing the more we train.

The other day I sent in the email that I would officially be keeping Paisley. I am so happy for the support and interest that everyone has shown us throughout our journey. I'm sorry to anyone who was interested in buying her at the auction. But I just can’t part with this sweet girl. ❤️❤️

And a HUGE thank you to Niki Pinkerton-Tubbin for making her a stall sign to match the others that she made for my birthday. 😁❤️

Day 65: Yesterday Paisley and I went to our first show! Oakley went as well and did great.

Paisley was very nervous with all the other horses and the people walking around her. And we discovered she isn’t a fan of paper being handed to me on her. Haha. Overall she did very well. We didn’t place in anything. But we gained a lot of experience, which is worth more than a ribbon.

Oakley placed 6 fourths, 5 fifths and 3 sixths. She did very well for her first show back since March.

We also ran into another girl doing the Challenge. Great job to Talartha Parkins and Feather!

I am so proud of both of them. Can’t wait to see how we do at the next show.

Day 57 (Saturday): Today we went to the Trainer Day at Fitzgerald Farms.

It was so much fun to see all the other trainers and how far they have come with their Mustangs. Great job to everyone! Can’t wait to see all the finished projects in September!

Day 56: Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. Things have been a bit hectic.

So a few days ago, Paisley and Oakley got into a big fight. Oakley made off well, being the Queen B, but Paisley got it pretty good. She has been very sore and has been limping a bit. As well as some pretty good battle scars. So she has had the last few days off with just some lunging at night.

We have been going on a lot of walks, cold hosing multiple times a day, and putting on liniment and sore-no-more. Hoping for a quick recovery so we can get back to work.

Day 46: Paisley and Oakley went in to the chiropractor today to get adjusted. Oakley is seasoned to being adjusted, so she went first and showed Paisley how it’s done.

Then it was Paisley’s turn. She handled it very well! She was a bit nervous at first when he was standing on the block above her. But calmed down and relaxed quickly. She allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Including her neck and legs. She kept playing with the block as well. She was nuzzling it and knocking it over. He and I were having quite a fun time watching her. 😂

The Chiro said that she was very mellow and calm for a 4 year old Mustang. He also said that he was expecting her to be more high strung and not “act like a 20 year old”. I am so impressed and blown away with how willing she is to do new things. And I really love how much personality she has❤️.

Highly recommend Columbia Equine Hospital. They are very nice to work with.

Day 46: Hauled Paisley out for another adventure today. Did some arena work then went out on the trails for a bit. Got to ride with Rosie and Blaze too!

21/07/2020

Day 45: After we finished today, Paisley got a little rinse off. She was even letting me rub her whole body down with a wash cloth and the hose. I was even able to spray her face a bit. It’s a good thing too, she was starting to smell pretty bad from all the dried sweat all over her. 😂

21/07/2020

Day 45: After our workout in the arena, Paisley and I went and met the cows! She loves them. She was tracking them almost completely on her own, and even went in and cut a couple out later on. I sense a little cow pony in my future.

17/07/2020

Day 42: We got more raffle tickets in! Teens And Oregon Mustangs is raffling a YETI cooler and a Cabela's generator for their fundraiser this year. Tickets are $10 each and you can get them from me. Drawing will be in September. You don't need to be present to win.

Day 41: My best friend Bry came over today and joined Paisley and I in a little photo shoot. (the rainbow earmuffs were her idea)

Then when I was feeding I thought that Oakley and Chance felt left out. So they got their chance to shine as well.
