Here at Homeplace Vet, our clients become part of our extended family. The Magsam family has been part of our family from almost the moment they moved to Kentucky. We are so proud of Julia and how much she has grown. She is quite an amazing horsewoman and this video shows that! Pony Club has helped shape her life, knowledge, and experiences. Congrats Julia- we are so proud of you!!!

Yesterday was Hannah’s last day at Homeplace as an undergraduate intern. If you have seen us on Mondays and Wednesday, then you got to meet Hannah. Hannah has been a huge help this year not only for her entertainment in the car, putting up with Rocky sharing her seat, treating Mula, and her kind hand with a horse amongst other things, but also for helping bring our amazing tech-Danielle to HVS!

To say that we are proud of Hannah would be an understatement! She is graduating Midway University and going on to follow her dream of being a professional rider. She recently got an amazing opportunity with a top rider/barn up north. While we will miss having Hannah around- we will still be keeping in touch with her!

Hoof balance is vital for a sound horse! If you are questioning the balance of your horse’s hoof- an X-ray can also help show the bone alignment as well (and gives your farrier more information!)

Hoof imbalance is one of the most common problems associated with lameness in a horse’s foot. It can be attributed to a variety of causes including conformation, the type of shoes fitted and how regularly the horse is shod.

Ideally, the horse’s foot should strike the ground as a unit, with the entire weight-bearing surface hitting the ground together. In the case of side-to-side imbalance (lateral-medial imbalance) the outside toe strikes the ground before the heel, with the inside heel landing last. This leads to uneven forces across the hoof and uneven loading of the lower limb joints.

Evaluating hoof balance is an acquired skill that demands practice and careful observation of the horse standing still (static) and in motion (dynamic). The static evaluation looks at the view from the back (palmar), the bottom (solar) and the front (dorsal) of the foot, while dynamic evaluation is undertaken by watching the horse walk and trot towards and away from the observer.

Correcting any imbalance commonly takes three to five shoeing sessions, although a horse with poor, particularly toe-out, conformation may make complete correction impossible. In such cases the vet and farrier must strive to achieve the best possible balance for that individual, while accepting that achieving ideal balance may cause more harm than good.

Answer!

The filly chocked on her food. In horses this often happens when horses don’t chew their food well or are greedy while eating. Food builds up in their esophagus and can’t pass; the horse will cough and some of the food particles will come up and be present in their nose and mouth.

Dr Ashley was called and the filly was sedated. Often times sedation is enough to allow the choke to resolve as it allows the horse to relax, their head drops and gravity works on the choke. In this case, sedation wasn’t enough and a nasogastric tube was passed. Water (passed through the ng tube) and gentle massage was used to break down the area of choke.

Once the choke was cleared, an antibiotic is given to help cover any potential issues from food particles going down the trachea and into the lungs.

The filly did great and got scheduled to have her teeth done the next day!

Teaching Tuesday!!!

A client just finished feeding her horses when she noticed her favorite filly opening her mouth weird and coughing.

What is wrong with her? Why did this happen and what will the vet do to “fix” this issue?

The mare had a vaginal hematoma. While it is non-life threatening, it can look a lot like a pr*****ed uterus, which is life threatening! It is very important to monitor your mare post foaling and call the vet if you have anything out of the normal that occurs.

This hematoma was left for several days to allow the blood to clot, then it was ligated (tied off) and cut off. The mare healed up wonderfully!!!!
