Harbour Tails Dog Walking Canine Mental Health Specialist and Dog Walker Using GPS trackers. 🎓Behaviour, Training, First Aid For me this is of course true.

Every dog walker starts with "I've owned dogs my whole life and LOVE dogs" as a reason to choose them. But I didn't think this was enough to be responsible for such precious members of the family and to run a professional and safe dog walking business. So, in 2015 I started volunteer dog walking and sitting for local military families. I continued this free service in my spare time until 2019, gai

ning experience. I went on to complete a NARPS dog walking and canine first aid course. From there I’ve to put my talents to setting up a professional, safe and reliable dog walking service you can trust. Covering Hamworthy, Upton, Poole. I’m DBS cleared and keep up to date with learning and qualifications. I renew my first aid course every 3 years. I also have reputable certificates in canine behaviour and training. You can see a list of my qualifications on my website. I know first-hand what a worry it is when you have to leave your dog in someone else’s care. You can rest assured that your dog’s safety and wellbeing is my top priority. That’s why I use an unbranded and adapted vehcile. I also attach a tracking device to your dog's collar for ultimate safety. I have a keen interest and passion for positive and fear/force free animal training. This has become a hobby I’ve enjoyed over the years with my own dogs, horses and I even trained my house rabbit a variety of tricks! Over the past few years there has been ground breaking scientific research across the globe to support the effectiveness of positive reinforcement training. I am passionate about continually researching, learning and practising positive reinforcement training techniques. Most rencently I have completed Training and Behaviour courses through the ‘Victoria Stilwell Academy” and IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers).

M, the young , has been doing great on his group walks since joining them in January! Thanks to his dedicated guardians, Harbour Tails walkers Sue and Dawn, and guidance from Dani, a qualified dog trainer and Harbour Tails owner, he’s smoothly transitioned from puppy visits and solo walks to group adventures. Careful socialisation and van habituation last year helped to set him up for success.

Hey 👋,

We reward volunteered check-ins and eye contact. And guess what? This simple habit leads to more frequent volunteered check-ins and eye contact. Why? Because dogs repeat what gets reinforced!

But here’s where the magic happens: The more your dog checks in with you, the more naturally they stay close and engaged during walks; walks where your dog looks to you for guidance and connection. That’s the foundation of a well-mannered, happy walking companion!

Want to strengthen this behaviour? Start rewarding those check-ins! What’s your dog’s favourite reward— tasty snacks or a game of tug maybe? 🐶

Hey! Cali dog here, aka Fun Times coordinator at Harbour Tails.

As each year at this time, a reminder that from *March 1st*, lots of our favourite places (heathland areas) are banned for off lead walks until August -to give nature and rare species peace for nesting.

It does mean our walking areas will be much more limited, more busy with other walkers, dogs people, and soon picnics, children and holiday makers.

You can make sure you get to have as much fun and freedom as possible on Harbour Tails walks despite these challenges by making sure your parents practice key skills regularly and reward them, like recall, checking in, waiting to the side of paths and "drop and swap" skills.

We may take, on occasion, dogs *on the lead* onto the Heathlands during this time to get for some different smells 💕

If you'd like any training tips to ensure you can have as much freedom as possible during this time do message us. My mum is a qualified dog trainer!.

Love, Cali.

Dog Trainer vs. Behaviourist – What’s the Difference?

The dog training and behaviour industry in the UK is unregulated, meaning anyone can call themselves a trainer or behaviourist without proper qualifications. This makes research essential when choosing a professional for your dog.

🐕 A Dog Trainer helps owners provide their dogs with fulfilling lives by teaching essential skills, preventing behavioural issues, building confidence, and helping owners meet their dogs instinctual needs. They also help with puppy socialisation, training tricks, and life skills. Ideally, a trainer should hold a recognised qualification (minimum Level 3) and have supervised training with a reputable organisation like IMDT or ABTC. (Hello 👋 - but I can recommend others too!)

📜 An Animal Behaviourist is needed for behavioural issues, especially severe or dangerous ones. They should have an approved degree-level qualification or higher and extensive supervised experience with a reputable organisation like the ABTC or CCAB. Their supervised training also involves building a portfolio of case studies to ensure they can assess and modify behaviour effectively and safely.

Since the industry is unregulated, always check credentials, qualifications, and experience before hiring a professional. Choosing the right person is key to your dog’s well-being!

Half Term Monday Adventures!

Our morning group took an unexpected turn when one of our pups got scared by the firing range noises. Too scared to continue her walk. Big thanks to Colleague Dawn for taking her home safely so I could continue the rest of the walk with the remainder of the group!

The lunchtime crew brought some muddy fun—one adventurous pup ended up belly-deep in the mud. Shout out to the power washer for saving the day!

The afternoon group walk was mainly smooth sailing 😜

All in all, a busy but fun start to the week!

⚠️Recently published research by University of Lincoln, UK supports theory that Punishing dogs Puts BOTH Dogs and Humans at Risk! ⚠️

The study, published February 2025 supports that using punishment-based training (hitting, yelling, lead pops, sprays, pain, fear) doesn’t just harm dogs—it makes them more likely to bite and show aggression toward people.

🔬 Key Findings:
🐶 Dogs trained with punishment were up to 11 times more likely to become aggressive.
👩‍👩‍👦‍👦 This means higher risks for owners, families, and the public—not just the dog.
✅ On the flip side, reward-based training and a focus to meeting dogs innate behavioural needs led to safer dogs with fewer aggression issues.

These so-called “trainers” pushing punitive methods aren’t just harming dogs—they’re endangering people. Period.

We advocate for science-backed training - both for dog welfare and human safety.

If you fancy some heavy reading, comments for full research paper!
