Have you ever came close to rehoming your crabs?
Have you ever taken in rehomed crabs?

I'm looking for the experiences of people who have rehomed or considered it. If you have, could you please fill out this survey?
If you kept in touch with those who have rehomed their crabs with you, would you send them this survey?

I've had 30 responses thus far and it's been VERY interesting! But I want more! :) I can't wait to share my findings at Crab Con 2024!

Hello Crab Owners, This survey is for my Crab Con presentation "For the Long Haul" where I hope to discuss what it really takes to successfully keep crabs over the years and decades. I would love to hear about your experience with hermit crabs! Your answers may be shared in my presentation to a publ...

Can you believe Crab Con is only 2 months away?! I'm really looking forward to attending Crab Con, it's the ONLY annual hermit crab conference!

What is Crab Con? It's an international conference packed with informational and inspirational presentations, fabulous shopping, and crazy crab people!

I've been in the online hermit crab community for 10 years and I'm really looking forward to finally meeting some of my online friends in person! Crab Con 2023 is a hybrid event, meaning there's both a virtual and in-person option in Blacksburg, VA!

Will you be joining us?!

Did you know?

A hermit's color will change throughout their life and molting cycle, due to environment, diet, age, and molting hormones. Color alone isn't an indicator of health. That's a myth! Even the purple-iest purple pincher may look gray, pale, blue, or orange in their life. That's why color isn't enough to determine species. Size /proportions, legs, claw size, behavior, and eye stalk shape all have to be taken into account.

What color are your crabs? And do you know their species?

Hermit Crab Care Tip: Replicate a tropical environment

Your crabs need heat and humidity to thrive. Use a "under the tank" heater on the BACK of the tank to keep the temp between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity should be 75-90%.

A wire cage or open top tank is NOT a suitable environment unless you also live in the tropics (and don't use AC).

Hermit Crab Care Tip: More shells, please!

Offer your hermit crabs lots and lots of shells! A good rule of thumb is 5 shells of the correct style and size per crab. Unpopular varieties of shells shouldn't be included in the 5 shell count, but can be added to the tank. More shells will reduce or eliminate aggression between tank mates.

2/10 -- hiding spot completely visible

When I first got my crabs in 2017, my hermit crabs were much smaller and LOVED this glass dome. To be honest, I haven't seen them use it in a few years, so imagine my surprise when I saw Henry hanging out--literally!

Also props to this glass maker for making a sturdy product. I can't count the amount of times I've heard a "clang" from my lil' bulldozers shoving this against the tank glass, and not a crack yet!

3/10 -- I've definitely seen better hiding spots.

Did you know that hermit crabs are also know as "tree crabs" and can be found up in the tree tops in their native environment? That's also why they LOVE climbing! What climbing opportunities do you have for your crabbies?

Hermit Crab Care Tip: New Food? Offer it 6x before giving up!

Hermit crabs can be picky eaters! Offer any new foods at least 6 times before deciding your crab "doesn't like it". If your hermit crab is full, see a more familiar food, or doesn't need that nutrient, they might not eat it on the first try!

Also... it can be hard to tell if your crabs are eating as they take super small bites. And they might not eat that night, they may just bury and dig all night instead.

I tell people Crabs are a lot like toddlers, they sometimes have to see a new food several times before they'll try a bite!

Oops, did I just say that?🙊

Now that you know better, you can do better! Make sure you read a trustworthy care guide for yourself, not just following random inaccurate social media posts 🫣 (yep, I went there).

This is probably the closest I've gotten to getting a visual confirmation on the s*x of my hermit crab "Henry" and (drumroll please) ...

I still have no idea. 🤦‍♀️ It doesn't really matter to me other than it would be nice to know what my tank is made up of especially since I've never seen mating behavior in my tank. BUT I'm not going to force my crabs out of their shell or invade their personal space to get a good look since it doesn't really matter to me. 🤷‍♀️

Do you know what s*x your crabs are?

With my new larger filtered pools I've noticed that my Purple Pinchers live up to their reputation and are indeed "toe-dippers". While it's common for the exotic species to be more deep-divers, my Purple Pinchers are not that. They will usually just hangout on the edge of the pool rather than "swimming" in it. That's okay though, even though they're not doing cannonballs, I know they're enjoying it in their own way. The larger pools keep the water fresher longer and combined with the filters, I know the water quality is higher for them. Happy crabbies mean more visible crabbies which means a happier crab-keeper! Want to see your crabs more? Level up their environment.

What new addition or change have you made for your hermit crabs recently?

Henry says "Hello!"
I just wanted to let you all know that all my crabs are snug as a crab in a coconut shell (you know, instead of "snug as a bug in a rug"? hehe)

Also wanted to apologize for being a bit MIA over the last few months on this account. I've been busy hanging out on the Crab Con Annual Hermit Crab Conference social pages gearing us up for Crab Con. Honestly? I am SO excited for Crab Con this year! It'll be the best yet, I just know it!

Anyway, you're going to see a little bit more of me and my crabs as I bring back cute crab pics and helpful tips!

Tell me something good in the comments! What have you (or your crabs) been up to in the last few months?

P.s. my Etsy shop is getting a complete makeover and my anticipated re-open date is March 17th!

There's over 5.2 million Etsy sellers, and only 0.5% have earned a Star Seller badge for a consecutive six months.

After a necessary (but tad long) social media break, I'm back! And I know EXACTLY what you want to see pictures of -- the finished Crabominium! I finished this baby off in November, so feast your eyes. It's a total of 95 gallons (55 on bottom, 20 in middle top, and 2x 10 exoterras on the corner tops). I will say since these pictures were taken, the crabs have redecorated a bit. 😂 But that's another post for another day. I am planning on sharing about this build in *detail* during my talk at this year's Crab Con! If you don't have tickets yet, grab them before the early bird pricing expires March 31st. (These days I'm also hanging out on the Crab Con Annual Hermit Crab Conference account as their volunteer marketing coordinator)... and p.p.s the etsy shop has new stuff! What would you like to know about the crab tank?
