I am a lifelong dog lover, and really became an advocate for healthy, fresh dog food after losing my dog Franklin to cancer at 8 years old. It's the same for our dogs. Most dog food is highly processed at high temps, so the nutritional value has to be added back in after processing. For our dogs, eating the same dog food day in and day out is like you or I eating the same cereal or fast food for e

very meal. It wouldn't lead to a very healthy life! I have devoted the last 3 years to researching and making appropriate dog foods and treats. I have also recently earned my Pet Food Nutrition Specialist certificate!

Best Friends’ Kitchen Story

In 2017, my heart dog, Franklin collapsed on a walk. We later found this otherwise healthy looking and acting dog had an aggressive and very common cancer; hemangiosarcoma. He would have a 6-8 month survival rate with surgery and chemo, Most dogs don’t survive it beyond 2 months. This was the first we had ever heard of it. I always knew that dogs had high cancer rates, but never thought it would happen to me.

Upon learning of his illness, I researched dog cancers, diets, and environmental factors. I learned that Franklin’s diet of higher-quality kibble, along with skin allergy medicine he’d taken much of his life were likely contributors.

I started cooking for him. The allergies disappeared! For the first time in his short 8 year life, he wasn’t scratching for the whole fall season! His coat shone like silk, and he was happy. Sadly, I was not able to save my dog from the cancer. His was a rapidly spreading, hard to contain cancer. I do believe I bought him some time. I know the new, delicious diet brought him quality of life during his illness.

After the loss of Franklin, I continued to cook my dogs’ food and treats for 2 more years, using only high-quality, human grade ingredients. The food is balanced, so that dogs who enjoy it do not suffer from nutritional deficiencies. I recently obtained my feed license from the state of Michigan. A few clients have jumped on along the way. Recently, I started selling at a local Farmers’ Market to a fabulous response.
