I have recently introduced the whistle to Dwight. So after a bit of loose lead walking, and watching the world go by, we headed to the park to practice his recall to the whistle. I think he smashed it, don't you?

A few snippets of our training session today in our local pet shop🐾

Today's focus: engagement
The goal was for Dwight to check in with me, and stay neutral to other dogs and people.
He smashed it!!

It can be really difficult for dogs to stay neutral in exciting environments, surrounded by lots of treats, dogs, and people baby talking them. My advice: advocate for you dog, be strict with your boundaries.
If you don't want your dog saying hello to other dogs on lead. A simple 'we are training right now' works wonders!
If you let your dog say hello to every person/ dog you see, how can you expect them to walk past them without getting excited?

Meet Dwight!

Dwight is my 6 month old working cocker, and this is a little snippet of our training walk today.

We have been practicing 'heel'.
When teaching 'heel' it's important to decide what a heel means to you, as it can be different for every dog owner.
Some owners want the focused heel with the fancy walk, some just want them to walk loose on the lead.
For me, I want Dwight to be next to me and pay attention to me. I'm not bothered about him being tight against my leg, I want a practical day to day heel.

You can't see in the video, but there were a lot of distractions at the field today, lots of birds, children playing and other dogs running about. Dwight absolutely smashed it!
