Quick PSA about grains: they’re not all bad for our fur babies!

When it comes to providing a balanced diet for our dogs, incorporating grains can actually be a healthy addition to their overall nutrition.

While some dogs thrive on grain-free diets (consult with your vet!), others benefit from the inclusion of whole grains, which offer vitamins, minerals, and essential fiber.

Not all grains are created equal in terms of benefits for your dog, though, so be on the lookout for cheap fillers like corn or soy (you won't find those in our recipes!).

It's beggin' season! 🐶

As friends and family gather for the festivities, it's always good to refresh your memory on what holiday foods are safe for pups.

📌 Save this post for a quick reference guide featuring common holiday ingredients!

SAFE FOR DOGS:

👍 Beef bones: Chicken, Turkey, & Pork bones are generally too soft and dangerous for dogs. Marrow is the safest natural bone for your pup.

👍 Plain turkey meat: unseasoned and skinless turkey is a great treat replacement and is safe in small quantities.

👍 Green beans: High in plant fiber, manganese, and vitamins C and K.

👍 Pumpkin: a great digestive aid to soothe your pup's belly, especially if he's getting more table scraps than usual!

👍 Healthy fruits: Apples are a common ingredient in holiday treats. Raw slices are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber.

👍 Sweet potatoes: Both a superfood for humans and dogs, sweet potatoes are a nutritious and tasty treat, but they should be cooked plain before serving.

👍 Carrots: Rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, carrots support eye health, overall immune system health, skin and coat!

UNSAFE FOR DOGS:

👎 Ham & turkey skin: Baked hams are typically filled with sugar, whereas deli hams contain high levels of sodium — neither of which are good for pets. Turkey skin is packed with seasoning, high in fat, and often soaked in other fatty substances like gravy that could cause acute pancreatitis in pets.

👎 Cooked bones: Once cooked, bones become soft and brittle and splinter, and can be very dangerous for your pup.

👎 Chocolate & sweets: Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine that dogs have difficulty metabolizing, leading to toxic levels of byproduct waste in the bloodstream.

👎 Grapes & raisins: Both are highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure, digestion issues, and sudden renal failure.

👎 Onions & garlic: Can damage a dog's red blood cells and lead to anemia.

👎 Macadamia nuts: Can cause painful symptoms like tremors, overheating, vomiting, and weakness.

👎 Bread dough (yeast): Rising bread dough contains yeast, which can cause a dog's stomach to expand and become distended. Best to avoid baked goods!

These are some of the most frequent comments on our video demonstrating the superior digestibility of cold-pressed dog food compared to kibble:

🗣️ "Stomach acid is different than a glass of water."

🗣️ "Dogs chew their food."

🗣️ "My dog is doing just fine on kibble."

None of those comments are technically wrong, but we are here to add a little context:

✅ Yes, stomach acid is different than a glass of water, but doesn't that make it more clear how quickly cold-pressed food breaks down? Plain and simple, your pup's stomach doesn't have to work extra hard to absorb cold-pressed food's tasty nutrients!

✅ True! Dogs *can* chew, but that doesn't mean they will 😅. It's not uncommon to find whole pieces of kibble if your dog regurgitates within a couple of hours of eating. You've seen it, admit it. 👀

✅ Is "just fine" good enough for our fur babies? If you ask us, that's a hard 'no.' Kibble is enough nutrition for pups to survive, but we want all of our dogs to thrive! With 70% of your pup's immune system found in the stomach, living their best life starts in the gut.
