Trainers routinely watch dogs play the game of offering their best to those who demand it and offering something very different to those who don’t.

The sheer number of highly trained dogs running around pretending not to know anything is one of the greatest ruses ever pulled on permissive and/or gullible owners.

This is why your trainer can’t (or shouldn’t) make any guarantees about how the dog will behave with you—because if you won’t hold the dog accountable for what it knows and is capable of, your dog’s “memory” will be impressively brief.

Of course your trainer has to train you as much as they do the dog—or more—but once that knowledge is passed along, only one party can make the new reality… reality.

And yes, you can feel free to substitute child for dog if that helps bring more clarity to this dynamic that you’ve almost certainly seen in other contexts.

Sniffing is very good for your dog's behavior! When they are slowly smelling everything, your dog is taking in information about the world, and their brains are working to process all that information. Sniffing also releases dopamine, which helps them relax.

Did you know, something as simple as sniffing a pile of leaves can have a calming effect on your dog? 🍂

Engaging a primary scent or carrying out repetitive actions such as licking or chewing (providing there’s no threat in the environment) are considered meditative processes. Why? Because they support appropriate gating of sensory integration.

This damping down of activity between neurons means there’s less traffic between the different brain areas, making communication much more ordered and rhythmical.

The people must learn for the dog to learn!

"Dogs don't understand don't, because don't is a concept. Dogs understand DO. They understand behaviours.

Create a beahviour that you DO want, so that your dog can be right and you're setting him up for reinforcement.

This makes for a much better relationship for you and your dog, and for anybody else who comes in contact with your dog."

Every dog has something to teach us if we are willing to pay attention and learn. Jasmine taught me to love after loss. Maverick teaches me patience and understanding that I never knew I was missing. Bella taught me that there's nothing better in the world than snuggling together for a nap. And Kiara is teaching me not to ever be too serious because there's always room for being silly. Have you ever been taught some life lesson from your dog? If so, what?

Bella has the most nicknames in my household! Jasmine is just Jazy, spazy, spazy jazy, or pretty girl. Maverick is mavy, mav mav, mavy shark, or bluey. Kiara is ki, ki ki, Baby Ki, or my favorite Kitty Kat. 🤣What's your silly nickname for your dog?
