Well we’ve walked in all weathers this week sun, wind, rain and snow but that didn’t stop the dogs from enjoying their walks in fact I think they preferred the snowy walks 😅

You have to treat walking your dog like driving a car.
Look a head read the walk look for others that might not be paying attention and ready to react.
Treat blind turns like stop junctions exercising the control and basic fundamentals you train for. Never forget to thank others and return kind turns.

A catch up on photos of the last 2 weeks.Plenty of fun and great company as always with this lovely bunch 🐾

A good way to train recall is to call your dog(s) between you and another whilst on a walk. You can extend distances and even hide for them to find you.

An active training walk where we would stop and do short heel work and positions.
Here Ruby is comfortable remaining where I left till I want her to move on command taking the shortest route to return.

CONTROL IS NOT A DIRTY WORD.
You can add little exercises in to routine walks just to mix it up. Little and often adds and your dog learns without it being a formal set up training session.

I like to exercise control/obedience and if I don’t intend to carry on I release him with ‘ Finish’ which means go and be a dog again till I talk you directly again.

Sounds muted due to the wind 💨

As a rule I never do before and after videos as think it’s a bit degrading in my opinion.

I have really enjoyed working with 2 dogs in the same house that are challenging as a breed on their own never mind together. Teaching control and obedience and how to read a walk just like driving you read the road to avoid a collision.

Strong working line breeds such as Malinios and collie x Kelpie only have to do or go somewhere twice and by the third they know it and have it figured out. So you have to be wide awake all the time or they take control of vehicle and you end up the passenger without even knowing it.

Great company as always this week 💕🐾

In the new year I will be starting a monthly group walk for all the dogs I work with to come together in a controlled manner to work around each other.
Once new dogs have got to the level of obedience and engagement to be around such a group they can join in.

Remaining in the down with a recall with a little twist.

The many moving parts that add up to do something like this would surprise you once you de compartmentalise it. Lots of bricks make a big wall 🧱

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for training or walking assistance with Matthew for training or jess for walking.

Secondary fear periods.
This tends to happen between 7-14 months and can last between 10-21 days each dogs different and it can really catch you out.
It’s a primitive self preservation mechanism that is designed to keep the dog safe and alive. Around this age if left to their own devices juveniles will start to get cocky and over confident before the reality of adulthood starts which they aren’t yet ready for. Then something kicks in like a crisis of confidence where things they have seen and experienced since day 1 become a big deal and very unnerving.
One of my dogs in training to be a search dog basically broke down on me at place where she had been lots from 10 weeks old and parked cars seemed to be fire breathing dragoons not moving cars or lorries even fast motor bikes but parked cars. She was 10 months old and it all made sense so I pumped the brakes stopped the technical work and we just went for walks and played local to home where she was comfortable and instinct told her to be. A month later she was back and even stronger.

It’s very each time their own how you deal with this situation some take the line of push through ignore it and other say cuddle and reassure I tend to do neither by staying well with in the realms of what they know and can do and I don’t acknowledge nervousness by doing this is feel I keep a consistent guide for them.

I do believe some breeds especially the herding breeds Collie, German shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Dutch Shepherd experience a strong 3rd fear period which does exist but not always prominent as the first 2 in the majority of breeds.

15/11/2023

First fear periods in a puppy's development . One is at 8-11 weeks approximately . These fear periods are evolutionarily programmed and are protective for dogs in the wild. Even though dogs live as pets now, the first kicks in at the point a puppy would venture from the den and stops it from venturing too far getting lost or eaten by a bird of prey or another mammal.

When this happens it can be subtle or rather full on and alarming. It will pass and your puppy will flourish and develop, I don’t ask anything of my pups that they don’t already know nor do I put them in new situations as it’s counter productive as they simply aren’t in the right head space.
It can be frustrating as you can’t comprehend why the plant pot that’s never moved has turned in to monster or it’s not wanting to interact as it had been all over you previously.

Please follow like and share what we do it’s greatly appropriated.
