I love when my former riders come for a ride! This rider graduated from the program earlier this year and has continued her riding education with a friend in the industry. She came back today and put a lovely ride on Aspen. What a great way to spend Sunday Funday!

What a journey...

Yesterday marked 18 months since my riding accident. It has taken every single day of that time to feel healed. It has been just as much heart and soul healing as physical...maybe more so.

I so desperately wanted to have the storybook happy ending with me and Hav. It didn't work out that way and it's ok.

Without trying to sound cliche, when I came to terms with my next steps and finally closed that door, Aspen opened a new door and busted right through.

Here's to the next chapter...

Aspen gets the gold star of the week! 🌟🌟

This mare has come so far in the past month! We've worked on relaxing in the arena, staying at a steady tempo, and straightness.

Aspen has responded so well to the increased work. She's got a good mind, a big heart, and a sweet disposition. ❤️

Aspen has grown so much and she's a blast to ride ... Not easy, but so much fun. 🏇

Starlight is reviewing the leveled curriculum. She approves!

provides a great outline. We've made a few adjustments to make it fit and flow with our program.

It's wonderful to have a concrete answers for questions like, "When can I canter?" or "When can I go on a trail ride?" or "When can I ride in a group lesson?"

We spend most of our time out of the saddle and it's important to have general horse knowledge in addition to riding skill development.

We had our first unmounted lesson at the new barn!

We talked through TRIGGER STACKING, and why horses can spook at things that did not bother them yesterday.

The students gave examples of potential horse stressors and labelled them 1-3. Fun fact: Once I had a jump lesson and a fox ran into the arena. 🦊

Each student had a turn to have a stress bucket held over their head. We rolled a die to determine how many scoops of water went into the bucket. After each stressor, the student said “This is fine! Everything's fine!” until the “stress bucket” ran over! 💦

We further talked about how each horse has a different size stress bucket. There's a reason the saying isn't, "The bale that broke the camel's back."

What a wonderful lesson! Great work everyone!

Thanks HorseSense Learning Levels for a wonderful lesson prompt!

This rider has gained so much confidence! The last lesson their horse was a little on the quick side. This lesson, we talked about how awesome their balance is and also how we can manage those types of situations as they come up.

Great seat and balance. Clear steering cues. Quiet trotting.

It doesn't get much better than this!

As an aside, walking under the trumpet vine makes for a perfect picture!

There's no such thing as a wasted lesson. Forgot your helmet? No worries! There are plenty of things to do and learn out of the saddle.

Speaking of saddles, they should be wiped down with a soft cloth after every use and conditioned once or twice per month.

Additionally, the rider can learn the different parts of the saddle while cleaning. Seat, pommel, cantle, stirrups & leathers, billets, flaps....so much to learn!

It's a win-win!
