Christmas is coming and people are asking for kittens. This is why we say no singletons. Do you know how many adult kitties that need single cat homes? Too many. Adopt them. They are even more grateful without the kitten energy. They love just as hard😻

*pending adoption
while getting Hay, this beautiful cat comes racing up to me meowing and meowing super thin and I scoop him up so he doesn’t get in the way of the tractor. The farmer tells me that he had just been dropped off at the property by a car sped away and how he had had it with people dropping cats off at his property. Fair enough it happens to Farmers all the time that people take indoor house cats and throw them outside and expect them to do well in freezing weather with no winter coat. I asked him if it’s OK that I take him and find him home. He agrees. This is the adoring look on this cat who is purring like crazy and making biscuits all over my horse blanket and gratitude for being in a warm truck. On my ride back from the Farmers I am blessed to find a Foster for him. This little guy is now safe and secure in a warm house where he belongs. And the best part is, I think my Foster is going to permanently keep him! These are the happy endings that we live for.

John Liddle of Sullivan County NY Social Services puts a 10 day demand notice to dump HOUSE cats yet neither the SPCA or Catskill are taking any cats in. Record numbers of cats are being put outside in FREEZING temperatures because this animal hating Jerk wants mass animal cruelty with no accountability. This is the exact BS I speak about all the time where someone acting in an official role actively PROMOTES MASS Animal Cruelty through force as accepted
social standard. This is not accepted social standard. these cats are not acclimated to outside. They do not have a winter coat and they don’t have an ability to hunt for their food because they’re not feral. Despite the urban myth that they actively hunt and fend for themselves is an absolute lie. He is actively endorsing and promoting animal abandonment in a cruel and inhumane manner at freezing and subfreezing temperatures. Call 845-292-0100 and LOUDLY voice your complaint. He should be removed from his position.

The amount of humans who just throw their cat outside to “survive” then the amount of humans who just walk right by is staggering. Then the rescues who go get the cats & spay/neuter them, get their shots, deworm & give any meds if needed then struggle to find a home because said humans want a “free” cat is mindblowing🤯
This mindset has to change. Let’s go over some numbers on your quote unquote free cat. You have approximately a 4 to 6 month wait at Tara for a spay neuter appointment and you have to either adjust your work schedule or take the day off to do this. I hope you’re equipped to wait that 4 to 6 months to spay your cat at the reduce rate of a minimum of $100 risking your pet going into heat or male musky maturity since this is the exact point that 90% of cats are thrown out of the house!!Then let’s add your distemper shot at $20 which leaves out calici and feline rhino, a microchip at $35 (if you are that responsible as those 90% thrown outside are NOT micro-chipped), add dewormer at $20 (which leaves out Pyrantel paomate and praziquantel - worm load & type are important). And last, a snap test which is another $35 to determine your new cat has FIV/FELV. So technically your cat will cost you $210 at the reduce rates in order to have basic care. If you take your cat to a vet for the same services, you’d be looking at triple to quadruple bill. And yet, every Rescue and Shelter that asks a fair adoption rate to reimbursement for SOME of the expenses that they make gets flack for what their adoption rate is. These adoption rates don’t take into account the High cost of cat food, cat litter, and any other care that they provide from cleaning ear mites, flea treatment, etc. because that stuff is NOT free and NO one is lined up securing funding for these expenses to help them stay afloat! These adoption rates also don’t take into account that rescues have had the time to assess the cat understand what their personality is and help match them into a suitable home so that it’s a good mix for both the humans and the cat.

Please stop supporting the free cat trade. Instead support your local rescues because they’re tired, they’re struggling with burn out and yet they feel that they can’t stop because they’re still too many cats being thrown outside unfairly with an unrealistic expectation to survive on their own.

Why are single adoptions frowned upon and denied? Many places have strict policies and 1 of them is the single kitten adoption. For so MANY reasons and these just being a few, we do not ever like to adopt kittens as singles. Kittens are highly social animals, they are still in the learning stage. They learn from each other. They thrive with a partner. (Humans like company of their own, don't you think they do?) If you are a person or family who go away a lot, vacation, weekends or even long day trips remember you are leaving this wee one behind. It's not right. Some don't think about what it does to the animal. So we ask that you truly consider the pet. Please read the attached link as well. Then next time if someone asks "WHY" they will understand. There are plenty of adults out there that enjoy the single life. Please consider one of those. *ALSO* one of the other reasons too - God Forbid you need to return this baby at some point, you've just gotten it used to being a single and after years of living that way, they are antisocial. Those are the cats that don't do well in shelters and can't go back to rescues with other pets because they don't do well. Rescues typically don't have homes without other pets. It's rare.

Single kittens are number one most returned animal to shelters. Learn about "single kitten syndrome".

Rescue is a CAT tastrophy! All the kitty problems out there are human caused. They just do the best they can with the cards they’re dealt. We blame the cats, we blame them for being “feral”, we blame them for marking, for having kittens, for anything that goes wrong in our day but who is it that should be held responsible? The person who isn’t socializing with their cat, the person who can spend their money everywhere else EXCEPT the spay neuter clinic, the person who doesn’t keep the litter box clean or ignores medical issues making their cat suffer. Let’s fix that.

This mentality causes too many the messes I get called to clean up🙄😞

Tabby Cat Rescue beginnings

Tabby Cat Rescue as a page has been 30+ years in the making. It all started a long long long time ago in the distant past when at age 11 in the middle of my parents divorce the kindest man I knew (other than my dad) ran a Humane Society and changed my life. I went there to escape home and fell in love with helping the animals. He took an angry child and soothed my hurt by teaching me how to heal the hurt of the animals there. He had an amazing sixth sense about them. Over the years I developed that sixth sense too. He was and always will be my cohort in difficult cases with an insight or suggestion I hadn’t thought of.

As a natural cat lover I felt a calling to help them most. Cats are all too often dumped outside to fend for themselves and become scared and prey for other animals. They don’t deserve that and we certainly owe them better, as much as we owe it to ourselves to be something better. I learned all about feral behavior and trapping. I learned how to rehab these terrified cats and kittens then fully re-imprint them with a better human experience. Over the years I honed these skills then privately, by referral only, moved my exceptional cats to new homes where their owners delighted in a real cat experience.

In honor of the man who taught me everything including so much about life this page is dedicated to you in the same way you misspelled my nickname. Without your patience I wouldn’t have all the memories from you that I do, and more importantly, your legacy of love of the animal continues in every animal I rehabilitate. Even as you memory fades your love of these animals shines through and brings you back for a bit each day. You are truly a patron Saint to them and, to me.

For the rest of you reading this, welcome. Come meet the crew and all the ones in transition. Exceptional homes are always on the wish list.
