Hi everyone! We just wanted to share some important information about dog food after doing some research. We decided to switch to one of the following brands for our dog’s food. These options stood out due to their natural ingredients and the absence of artificial preservatives like BHA and BHT, which is important for minimizing potential health risks.

Here’s the research behind our decision:

• Artificial Preservatives: BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants used to prevent fats and oils in pet foods from going rancid. They have been controversial due to potential health risks, including links to cancer.

Some high-quality pet food brands avoid these additives. Nature’s Logic, Acana, Orijen, and Merrick are known for NOT using BHA or BHT. However, it’s always good to check the most current ingredient lists as formulations can change.
• Fillers and By-Products: High-quality brands generally avoid fillers and animal by-products, which are often associated with lower-quality diets and potential health issues over time. The brands we’ve considered focus on high-quality, natural ingredients.
• High-Quality Ingredients: Brands that emphasize natural, whole foods and avoid artificial additives are generally considered better for overall health. This approach is associated with reduced long-term health risks.
• Cancer Risk: While avoiding certain additives like BHA and BHT can reduce potential risks, no dog food can completely eliminate the risk of cancer or other health issues. A balanced diet, regular vet check-ups, and an overall healthy lifestyle contribute significantly to a dog’s long-term health.

Here’s a closer look at each brand:

1. Nature’s Logic:
• Cancer Risk: Very low risk due to its use of whole foods and avoidance of synthetic chemicals.
• Other Health Concerns: Generally considered very safe, with a focus on high-quality, natural ingredients.
2. Acana and Orijen:
• Cancer Risk: Low risk, as these brands focus on biologically appropriate diets with no artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors.
• Other Health Concerns: Some dogs with food sensitivities may need to be careful with high protein content, but these are high-quality foods overall.
3. Merrick:
• Cancer Risk: Low risk due to natural ingredients and the absence of BHA, BHT, and other artificial preservatives.
• Other Health Concerns: Merrick is generally well-regarded, though, like all foods, it’s important to ensure the specific formula matches your dog’s dietary needs.

Just a friendly reminder that sago palms are quite common but very poisonous to dogs and cats. Please keep your pets safe!

Sago palms are fatal for dogs.

A popular landscape plant, sago palm, can be fatal to pets, and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine has seen an unusual number of dogs sickened after eating it.

Our precious Diamond (Zoro) went to his forever home! 🏡While we are overjoyed for him, the absence of all our little bundles of joy is hitting us hard. Missing each and every one of them like crazy! 🥹❤️

Five of our puppies went to their homes over the weekend! 🏡 Leaving our poor Emerald alone with the boys without her BFFs, so I was keeping her company until she left to her forever home yesterday. I miss her so much, 🥹 I called her Isabella because something about her personality just fitted. Even though I miss her, it warms my heart to know she found an amazing family right here in SWFL. Out of the black tri trio, now we only have Diamond available. Turquoise has been reserved but will be staying with us for a couple of days and keep Diamond company. 💚💎

The issue with "Adopt Don't Shop" goes beyond blaming reputable breeders. Buying a well-bred, purebred dog does not increase shelter populations or sentence other dogs to death. A breeder who health tests, temperament tests, studies pedigrees, proves a dog worthy of being bred, and only breeds to benefit the breed is not contributing to the number of homeless dogs. Without reputable breeders there wouldn’t be any purebred dogs! All dogs would be mixed breeds with potentially more behavioral problems. Reputable breeders preserve pure breeds, ensuring dogs with predictable temperaments and healthy lineages. They are not responsible for dogs in shelters.
Supporting shelters can inadvertently support irresponsible breeding. Shelters often fail to address the root problem, allowing irresponsible breeding to continue. Instead of blaming reputable breeders, why not implement laws, given that there are laws for almost everything else, to license reputable breeders and criminalize irresponsible breeding? This would be a straightforward solution, so why not push for laws against mixed breeding? License the reputable breeders, and criminalize unlicensed irresponsible breeding.
Shelters need irresponsibly bred dogs to maintain their operations, offering them at lower costs under the guise of “adoption fees” and if they can’t sell them, they euthanize!

So where does the blame fall?

•Your neighbor down the street who refuses to contain his unaltered dogs is contributing to the problem.
•People who don’t spay or neuter their dogs.
•Your friend who impulse bought a dog at Pet Land is contributing to the problem.
•That guy on Craigslist pumping out trendy designer mixes as fast as he can is contributing to the problem.
•Your relative who insists on letting their dog have one litter “so she can experience motherhood” or because “she’s just so sweet” is contributing to the problem.
•Your old high school classmate who bought a high-energy working breed without researching its needs and realizing it was not a good fit for their household is contributing to the problem

Reputable breeders provide lifelong support, ensuring their dogs do not end up in shelters. They would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter. They make it a contractual obligation to take back any dogs they have produced if the owner can no longer keep them.
It is understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you look deeper, you will find your anger is misplaced. Reputable breeders and those who purchase from them are just as angry about this issue. The difference is, we are pointing fingers at the right causes.
