A little sneak peak of what is coming to consignment.

Little Red Luck, aka Solo, is a 2007 model who has been used as a rope and barrel horse in her prime. Most recently she’s been a little girl’s best friend and the horse she learned to ride on.

She’s in for a tune up and then to be on the market. Don’t let her age fool you, she has a lot of miles left in her!

Here’s some things to consider before you send your horse to a barrel trainer going into the New Year.

FIRST, keep in mind you’re sending them off to learn the pattern and develop confidence and speed - NOT to be started.

Your horse should have a solid foundation before you send them off to learn their performance skill.

Now, hear me out for a minute…what I mean by that is your c**t should be walking, trotting and loping quietly and collected.

If he’s flailing around, each foot in a different direction, head all over the place - he isn’t ready.
If he can’t stop and turn around - he isn’t ready.
If he can’t follow his nose - HE IS NOT READY.

He should be soft in the face and well responsive.
He should be able to move his shoulders and hips, together and independently, when asked.
He should be able to STOP.
He should be able to back up.

He should be a basically well put together gentleman with a solid set of BASIC SKILLS that he should have learned in kindergarten before he goes off to “college”.

If your horse IS NOT PREPARED, you’re setting them and your trainer up for failure. Now, an open conversation with the trainer about STARTING one is a different story…but the problem is that people bring a kindergartner to college and blame the trainer when their precious Dash For Frenchy isn’t running at the top of the 1D in 60 days.

This is a simple case of EXPECTATION vs REALITY and I see it CONSTANTLY.

Sending your horse to the barrel trainer with that foundation sets them up for success. It ensures they are ready to take on the demands of their skill and the speed at which they progress. It also ensures that your trainer can actually do their job.

So, before you call up that barrel trainer and ask them about openings in 2025…you be sure to check in with yourself & your c**ts. If your horse isn’t already pretty broke, make sure you’re honest with your trainer and EXPECT that horse to spend more time with them.

Ask yourself this: Is your horse REALLY ready for college, or are they still stuck in kindergarten? Knowing the answer will only set you, and your trainer, up for success.

SFR Sterling Cash has enjoyed her month off from running barrels and is in tune to get back at them!

We’re ready to be back at it as well. It was a well deserved break for her from entering!

Rowdy has only been here since the 15th and is already getting things figured out.

Working on more fluidity on that backside of each barrel.

I can’t believe we are still able to ride outside on Christmas Eve yet! I’ve been enjoying every minute of still being able to ride outside!

It’s time I let a little secret out of the bag 🤫

An opportunity presented itself to purchase a cute little mare, thanks to Bo Woodall. I wasn’t in the market but the stars aligned on this one.

Introducing coming 3 year old French Lil Corona, aka Flirt. She’s by Frenchmans Big Bucks (Frenchmans Guy), out of a Corona Cartel mare, and paid into Future Fortunes. 🤩

For now she’s a prospect to sell in the future. God is funny sometimes and gives you opportunities when you least expect it. 🩷

Paisley finished her 30 days of pattern work strong and headed back home over the weekend.

Excited to see her progress continue at home with her owner!

✔️ 2025 Training Checklist ✔️

Have you completed the following before sending your horse to training?

Here are things you can do to set your horse up for success with your trainer:

1. Teeth Checked & Floated - Especially for these young ones. You should start floating teeth as early as a yearling. These c**ts go through so many changes each year, and you would be surprised at how much their teeth change! Also look to get wolf teeth pulled if they are youngsters as well!

2. Lameness Exam & X-Rays - Is your horse sound? I don't care if they have been to the chiropractor, yes that is good to do but have they been vetted sound? If not, that could impact what the progression of the horse does in training. Be sure to eliminate any soundness issues so the trainer can know that something isn't bothering them physically and it's just a training issue.

3. Farrier Work - No hoof, no horse. Proper hoof care and farrier work is essential to the soundness and performance of horses. Please make sure your horses' farrier work is up to date and they have proper angles. The feet affect the whole body and if it's not correct then you will see issues arise elsewhere.

4. Load & Unload in a Slant Trailer - For my training program this is a big one, I do not have an indoor arena so in the winter and when it is muddy out, I have to haul to an indoor. If I have to spend hours on training your horse to load or back out of a slant trailer, that not only cuts into your horse's training time but other client's as well. Please work with your horses to get them to load, unload and haul with manners. It only makes both our jobs much easier.

All of these things affect performance. If your horses aren't well taken care of then this gets reflected in the training. The trainer cannot fix teeth, soundness or poor farrier work. We are not miracle workers.

So please do your due diligence prior to sending your horses to the trainer!

Paisley coming right along in her training here, and feeling a little spicy in these cold temps! 🥶

She’s ready to go home on Sunday!

SMC Last Call Missy hasn’t seen the pattern since the end of October, and picked back up close to where we left off!

A late lead change for second barrel, but otherwise pretty and smooth!

Excited to send her to Oklahoma in January for 60 days of breakaway training, and get her back in full swing on the pattern to prepare her for her 2026 futurity year!

27/11/2024

Less than 150 days left to go! 🥳

Both broodies are due in April 2025 to SMC foals!

🔺 Smooth Movin Cash x Blazin Kristy - Sorrel Broodmare

🔺 Smooth Movin Cash x Featured Illuminator - Grey Broodmare

We’re excited for these two babies to come!

Paisley is really getting this barrel pattern down!

She’s gaining confidence more and more with every ride! She only has a couple weeks left here!

25/11/2024

Diva’s nearing the end of her 60 days here in mid December.

We’ve been working on picking up into a lope within a few strides or less, collection, rib cage control, side passing, pivoting, you name it.

Working on building her a solid foundation to go home with.

Oh, did I mention her stop? That has been a natural button for her. But oofta! 😍

22/11/2024

Paisley is getting the pattern down in just a short time here.

She’s gaining more and more confidence with each ride. She’s unsure of what leads to take yet. But an easy fix that will come with time as she gets a better feel for things!

She has just a couple more weeks here before she goes back home!

The Backstory

I am Chyenne Mortenson. I grew up near Cherokee, IA on a small family farm which encompassed cattle, hog, and grain operations. My passion for horses started as a young child, and progressed from there. I started my foundation in the showing world which laid a solid foundation of my horsemanship skills. As I grew older, I transitioned into the barrel racing and rodeo industry. That’s where I found my niche in the equine industry.

My cousin introduced me to horses when I was eight years old. I was hooked instantly, and somehow convinced my dad with my charm to buy me a horse of my own. I started my showing debut in the Sioux Valley Appaloosa Club, and joined the local 4H club as soon as I was eligible. I started to find my true passion in barrel racing when I began entering local NBHA jackpots around my 7th grade year. From there I participated in the Iowa High School Rodeo Association, and rodeoed at the amateur and collegiate level at SDSU.

Since then I have had individuals coming to me to tune up, train, and/or sell their horses. I have taken my own personal horses and trained them as well. This is where my idea sparked for CM Performance Horses to make it something of my own.
