During our initial assessment, we discovered that Mr. Licorice only weighed five pounds as an adult. He had a nasty smell due to an infection that had caused mucous discharge to dry up around his eyes and nose. Mr. Licorice's nose was so stopped up that he was forced to breathe through his mouth. His gums were extremely pale, and a blood test revealed that he was anemic.
Mr. Licorice was started on oral and ophthalmic antibiotics, pain medication, flea and tick prevention, and dewormer, and was fed via syringe.
It was going to be touch-and-go during the days following Mr. Licorice's initial assessment and treatment. He was so weak when he first came in, and we were worried we might be too late. However, he eventually began perking up and he purred whenever we were near! We were even able to get Mr. Licorice into the bath, and we think he actually enjoyed it. His fur was full of dead fleas, dirt, debris, and grime, which must have been extremely uncomfortable.
During his bath, we also noticed signs of skin inflammation and itchiness, so we scheduled an appointment to get this checked out by the vet. It turned out to be a bacterial skin infection, most likely caused by flea dermatitis.
During our second vet visit, the doctor determined that Mr. Licorice will need to have his left eye removed. His right eye might also need to be removed due to a deep corneal ulcer. He is beginning treatment to hopefully save the eye, and we will reassess his condition after a week on the new medication.
Mr. Licorice is still anemic, but we are hoping this is because he is still recovering from the massive flea and tick infestation. Once we can get his anemia under control, he will undergo surgery to have his right eye removed. Since being in our care, he has gained two and a half pounds and is on a host of medications.
Please consider helping Mr. Licorice by donating to his medical fund or sending a get-well gift from his wishlists, such as food, treats, and supplements.
Thank you so much for your gracious compassion. ❤️
