Based on the wildlife encounters to and from farm calls this week, spring is definitely in full swing!

If it’s safe to do so, take a pause and help our wildlife friends that are just trying to survive this crazy human world they live in. 🐢🦆🦝🐿️

Who doesn’t love a heartthrob? ❤️😍

Meet El Chapo 5 (lovingly known as Porkchop or Chops), a 10 year old Oldenburg stallion, owned, trained and ridden by Rachel Wolf of Wolf Equestrian at Windamawr Stables, LLC.

Rachel and Chops are gearing up to head to Florida, so of course an acupuncture treatment was warranted to make sure he’s in top form.

Although Porkchop is a formidable competitor, outside of the dressage or jumper ring, he’s a big floppy Labrador that wants to sit in your lap. 🦮🫶

Happy Monday! The adorable Fia and Dottie are here to remind everyone that all equids, including minis and donkeys, require routine dental care. 🦷🫏🐎

There are many components to a dental exam, one being assessment of the incisors. As you can see in the pictures below, Dottie has a perfect smile. Fia on the other hand, has maleruption and some rotation of her adult incisors (common in mini horses).

Moving forward, Fia will require adjustments to these teeth to prevent soft tissue damage from sharp enamel points, and monitoring for periodontal disease development secondary to feed packing.

Side note: Fia and Dottie also strongly recommend having curious goat 🐐 friends.

Maybe they came for the free lunch. Maybe they came for the charismatic speaker.

Regardless, a great discussion on equine welfare, access to veterinary care, and community medicine was had. The future of equine medicine is bright with these students in it! Bravo UMN Scaaep and thanks for bringing me back to where it all began so many years ago! 🩺🐎

Every October, one week is dedicated to veterinary technicians as a means to recognize their hard work. However, one week is certainly not enough to thank them for ensuring veterinary medicine functions at all.

In 10 years of practice, I feel so fortunate to have worked side-by-side with skilled technicians that have certainly saved my a** a time or two.

Veterinary technicians get patients through anesthesia safely. They provide pivotal ICU care and comfort to animals while hospitalized. They educate owners and answer questions when the doctor cannot. They put their patients first, often at their own expense. I could go on and on. Moral of the story, thank the technicians that work at your animal’s veterinary hospital and thank them again. They are the backbone of animal healthcare. 🐎🐕🐄🐈🐐🐏🦆🦝🐅🦎

Lastly, I know it seems like the doctor should be able to trim nails and draw blood, but the truth is, we can’t. I’d leave that to the technicians as well. 😉

Let’s talk permission points when it comes to veterinary acupuncture.

Simply speaking, a permission point is often chosen for its calming effects on the horse and introduces them to needle placement. Every veterinary acupuncturist has their favorite permission point, however, the needs of the individual patient may also dictate which point is best.

My favorite permission point is GB (gallbladder) 21, which is demonstrated in the picture below with the purple arrow. Although this point is not commonly known for its calming properties, it is easy to place (even in more anxious patients), places the acupuncturist in a safe position, and most horses quickly start yawning, chewing, and lip licking shortly after the needle has been introduced.

When we know better we do better. Just returning home after an EXCELLENT week learning from some of the leading experts in equine dentistry at Midwest Veterinary Dental Services.

Important take home message - anatomy, anatomy, anatomy & exam, exam, exam! The basics will only make us more able to handle difficult proficiently.

Keeping a veterinarian involved in your horse’s dental and oral health is so important! Not only will they provide a nose to tail exam, devise safe sedation and pain control protocols, but will also use their in-depth knowledge of anatomy to identify even subtle pathology, preventative medicine at its best.

Thank you MAI Animal Health Zoetis Equine & Midwest Veterinary Dental Services for such an interactive and hands on CE!

When it comes to acupuncture, people commonly see us treating horses, donkeys, and mules, but did you know other species can benefit from acupuncture too?

Meet Jags, a hard working Jersey cow that was in need of some relief from musculoskeletal discomfort.

We are happy to report that Jags responded well to her first treatment and looks forward to more! Dairy cows, along with other livestock species certainly work hard for us, so it’s pretty great when we can give back to them. 🐄🐐🐂🐖

In terms of preventable healthcare, dental float is very important. Inadequate dentistry contributes to periodontal disease and is a significant cause of malnutrition and colic!

What is veterinary medical acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the placement of fine, sterilized needles at specific points on the body to gain access to, and elicit a response from the nervous system to help treat pain and other various disease processes. Studies have shown that acupuncture has the ability to enhance the release of pain relieving substances within the body called endogenous opioids. How cool is that?

If you have ever watched a veterinarian that performs acupuncture, you may notice they will periodically twirl the needle with their hand. This is a way to stimulate that specific point. Another way this is achieved is via electroacupuncture (EA), in which a gentle electrical current is passed between 2 needles, providing steady and constant stimulation. At first, many patients may seem mildly unsure of what is happening, but they quickly relax and will lick their lips, chew, yawn, and even snooze! 💤😴

When like minded people come together to solve a problem great things happen!

Yesterday, we spent the day in Cleveland, TX, working with Laurel's House and ThisIsHouston spaying & neutering 150 dogs well into the night. A big win for the community, the dog owners, & the access to vet care mission. ✌️
