I used to think Heera was just “dramatic” because he would refuse to leave the house if it was raining, and would freeze if asked to walk through puddles
That’s before I learned that dogs with chronic pain can struggle with rough terrain, wet surfaces, and cold weather
Since diagnosing his hip dysplasia and arthritis, and developing a proper pain management plan, he is becoming KING OF THE BOG
He splashes through puddles, climbs over rocks, pushes and through wet grass
His sensory sensitivities faded and he started enjoying activities that previously overwhelmed him
Training sensitive dogs is less about when we reinforce behaviors and mostly about making sure their basic, fundamental needs are met
In Heera’s case, getting these diagnoses and accessing expert non-dismissive care was a a struggle
But 100% worth it
So here is my bog poodle showing us just how resilient our dogs can be when we take a holistic, welfare-focussed approach to their care
