Many foreign rescue dogs have some Livestock Guardian breeding in them, such as the Romanian Miriotic Shepherd Dog or Carpathian Shepherds, which can make them more prone to:
- Barking
- Reactivity to strangers and dogs
- Upset about visitors coming to your house
- Sometimes termed as "stubborn" or "difficult to train"
But actually, these dogs are doing what they've been bred to do: chase off scary intruders who might threaten their flock (i.e. YOU!).
They're not barking to annoy you, they're not trying to be difficult, but they're battling with their breeding and genetics that's telling them to 'bark at that scary thing approaching!'
Sometimes understanding WHY our foreign rescue dogs are doing things can help us help them, and give us a bit of empathy towards them when they're struggling to control their behaviour in this new world they've found themselves in.
Does your foreign rescue dog have a lot of reactivity?
