Hi everyone!

Just wanted to take a moment this morning with all of you. Most of you know that things are tough right now. Adoptions are slow and the amount of dogs in the shelters is staggering. We have to say no far more than we ever have before and we aren’t taking any owner surrenders right now so we can give priority to the Dobies at the shelters in danger. We still get calls and messages every single day from people wanting to give up their dogs. Animal shelters and Veterinary clinics are slammed and many are understaffed just like so many other industries. We see posts almost daily now from rescues that are halting intake or even shutting down entirely due to lack of help and funds. It’s a tough place to be for people right now and so many are struggling. This may be preaching to the choir but we share this with all of you today for 2 reasons.
#1: Please practice compassion and patience for those that are showing up. It will take longer at the veterinarian than before so allow for extra time and bring a book. The animal shelter employees are under more pressure than ever and have to do the job no one else wants to all while being called murderers. Don’t take your frustrations out on the people showing up.
#2: we are massively grateful to all of our supporters out there. While adoptions are slow, we are still finding homes for dogs and thanks to all of your generosity, we are still able to afford to keep the train running here. Thank you to all of you that continue to share our dogs, donate, volunteer, and support. We really do appreciate you and you are helping us get thru this difficult time.

P.S. all of these dogs are available for adoption and listed on our website. Send in an app today if you’re ready to take one home!!

Please reach out to Dobies and Little Paws for more info.

🇺🇲WWII uncovered: Derek Dunn Joins the US Marine Corps

Please join us at WWII uncovered in honoring one special Marine... Corporal Derek Dunn

On November 27, 1943 Derek Dunn applied for service with the US Marine Corps. Derek, born on June 5, 1942 stood shoulder length at 26 inches. He did not run away and he was an investigator. Derek Dunn was accepted as a Devil Dog with the US Marine Corps on January 29, 1944. Derek, a Doberman Pinscher, was off to Fort Jackson South Carolina to train for the Devil Dog program. He was the personal pet of Staff Sergeant Frank Dunn and his wife Priscilla.

"I am glad to be able to tell you that Derek #260 proved to be a very good dog in training. He was trained as a messenger dog and was transferred overseas with his two Marine handlers several months ago, leaving here in fine shape. His team was assigned to one of the Combat War Dog Platoons overseas as a replacement." - official correspondence to Mrs Dunn August 3, 1944.

Derek completed over twenty months of
active service as a Marine War Dog, during which time his conduct and performance of duty were excellent. Due to his performance Derek was promoted to Corporal on January 28, 1945.

Corporal Dunn returned to the United States and was stationed at Camp Lejeune North Carolina where he completed War Dog Training School - undergoing rehabilitation and detraining. He was Honorably Discharged on February 5, 1946.

Following his return from World War II, Derek was assigned to handler George Baker (pictured below). They marched in parades and made public appearances for the Marine Corps League. Corporal Derek Dunn passed away in 1952. He was 10 years old. Lest We Forget.

Very interesting.

Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dog’s nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog’s nostrils doesn’t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let’s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

Interesting facts about Doberman Color.

07/06/2022

"There are no records, only speculation, as to the dogs which went into the creation of the original Doberman, but it is documented that crosses were made to two of the English breeds around the turn of the century, using the Black and Tan Manchester Terrier and the black English Greyhound, in order to improve the Doberman’s appearance. It is generally accepted as fact that the two German breeds, which played a major role in the Doberman’s ancestry were: the old German Shepherd, now extinct: and the German Pinscher – the ancestors of the Rottweiler and the Weimaraner.

The old German Shepherd contributed ruggedness, intelligence and physical and mental soundness, with the Pinscher adding the terrier fire and quick reaction time. The Weimaraner gave to the Doberman its hunting, retrieving and scenting capabilities, for the Weimar Pointer, as it was called, was an all purpose hunting dog. However, it was to the Rottweiler which the early Doberman strongly resembled, that the breed owes so much of its substance, bravery and reliable guarding ability." - Peggy Adamson

When seen from the front, the head widens gradually toward the base of the ears in a practically unbroken line. ◾Eyes almond shaped, moderately deep set, with vigorous, energetic expression. Iris, of uniform color, ranging from medium to darkest brown in black dogs; in reds, blues, and fawns the color of the iris blends with that of the markings, the darkest shade being preferable in every case. ◾Ears normally cropped and carried erect. The upper attachment of the ear, when held erect, is on a level with the top of the skull. 🐾

06/07/2021

Read the heartbreaking condensed version of Aspen's life and the horrors she must face daily. Aztec does not now nor will ever condone the breeding of albino Dobermans.

The truth (and heartbreak) regarding albino Dobermans: "Aspen's beginnings in life were less than stellar. She was part of a large confiscation case in Florida where authorities found her living in a storage shed with other exotic animals who were all severely neglected. Girl was extremely thin, heartworm positive, had a hernia, an infected toe, and multiple growths that needed removed off her delicate skin.

As many of you know, our "white" Doberman is actually a canine affected with albinism which wreaks havoc on her health. Several new growths have popped up on her delicate skin and she's getting them removed once again. According to her pathology reports, Aspen is already living on borrowed time, so we celebrate each day spent with her. Intentional breeding of these delicate creatures needs to stop as well as supporting these unethical breeders by purchasing their special needs pups."
