Fur and hair. While these twos words are often used synonymously they are in fact very different from each other. Fur grows to a genetically predetermined length then stops. Hair on the other hand, grows until it naturally breaks or is trimmed with scissors or clippers.

Most domestic felines are fur bearing. This does not mean they all have the same length, each has their own length determined by genetics. However, there are breeds such as Persians and Himalayans whose coats do contain hair that naturally breaks.

There are various textures among hair bearing canines from the straight coat of a Yorkshire Terrier to the ever curly coat of a Poodle.

There is a huge variety of fur bearing canines. Some with very sleek coats such as the very popular French Bulldog to fur that is several inches long such as the German Shepherd Dog. Again, it's not the length that makes the determination.

Combination coats include those with fur in some areas and hair in others. This is not a reference to the mixed coats such as doodles and many other mixed breeds. Canine combination coats include breeds such as the Afghan Hound as well as both English and American Cocker Spaniels. Feline combination coats include the Maine C**n and the Norwegian Forest Cat.

There is much variation among feline coats and even more among canines. Keeping this in mind, we must realize that brushing and combing may not be as simple as it sounds. Here are a few things your groomers needs you to know about brushing and combing your pet:

1. Brushing and combing should begin before you even take you kitten/puppy home. A reputable. ethical breeder will have started this at 6-8 weeks of age, about 4-6 weeks before you bring them home.

2. Brushing and combing should be as much a part of your pet's routine as eating, going for a walk, playtime, etc... Choose a time of day that is convenient for you. Have a designated area for brushing/combing. This can be a table, a counter area, or even the top of your washing machine or dryer. If necessary, you can have them stand on a towel for a bit of traction to prevent slipping.

3. It is absolutely imperative that you use the proper brush/comb. Not only does this ensure you do a proper job but also prevents damage to delicate skin. Your professional groomer can advise you on the best equipment for your pets individual coat.

4. The coat type will dictate the schedule your pet needs for home maintenance. This could be once a week or once a day depending on the coat type, length, and professional grooming schedule.- Again, your professional groomer will advise you on a successful home schedule.

5. Knowing how to properly use your equipment is just as important. Have your groomer show you how to properly brush and how to line comb the coat for longer lengths. This ensures the coat is tangle free all the way down to the skin without causing damage the way many slicker brushes can do.

Keep in mind that the longer the coat, the more frequently it will need brushing/combing. Your professional groomer will advise you on the best length for your pet based on lifestyle, maintenance, coat type, etc... Take the time to talk to your groomer regarding the best schedule for your pet.

Price increases. Many groomers dread this moment as inevitably there are clients who either become angry or try to guilt their professional groomer into not increasing their price. Neither of these responses are warranted nor should they be tolerated. Your professional groomer doesn't raise prices for the fun of it, it is a necessary part of staying in business. Here are some things your professional groomer needs you to know:

1. Price increases are necessary. Just like any other profession, price increases are a necessary part of running a successful business. No small business can continue to exist without ever increasing their prices.

2. Inflation affects your professional groomer too. The costs of power, water, gas, and rent have all increased. Your groomer must increase prices to cover these expenses.

3. Salon expenses you may not be aware of have also increased. Shampoos, conditioners, clipper blades, scissors, sharpening services, the list goes on and on...all of these expenses must be covered by increasing grooming prices.

4. Professional groomers must be able to make a livable wage. They cannot operate a professional salon for minimum wage. They must be properly compensated for increases in doing business as well as their skills and education.

To sum things up, if you expect your professional groomer to stay in business and thereby care for your pet, please do not complain when they increase prices. Remember that if they cannot earn a proper living, they may decide to close the doors...which leaves you searching for another groomer.

We grieve too for the loss of your pet and though we may not show it up front, we sometimes weep behind closed doors.

Losing a pet can be one of the most difficult things a pet owner faces throughout life. Studies show the grief of losing a pet is no less painful than losing a human family member for many pet owners. Professional groomers not only empathize and understand, but share in your grief as well. Here are a few things your professional groomer wants you to know:

1. It's not uncommon for a professional groomer to provide services for a pet for their entire life. We watch them grow from wiggly pups into mature adults followed by becoming a geriatric. We grow attached. We love them for who they are with any silly quirks.

2. Because we do see them on such a regular basis, they become part of our family. We grow to know them as an individual. If we see you in public, we may not remember your name, but rest assured we know your dog's name. We have a connection with them. Forgive us if we only know you as Fluffy's mom or dad.

3. We completely understand your grief. Grieving a pet is not silly or wrong. It is painful and can sometimes be traumatizing. We understand because we hurt with you. We will miss your pet being a part of our lives. We cry on the phone with you or sometimes alone out of sight so as not to upset the other clients.

4. If you need someone during this difficult time, reach out to us. We can talk about them with you or simply listen. It's also perfectly okay to reach out to a counselor or therapist who specializes in pet grief. Remember that grief has no time limit and we all grieve in our own ways. Be kind to yourself ❤
