We sell eggs from our pasture and woodland free-range chickens and ducks, all raised here at the farm since they were tiny nuggets. The chickens leave their coop just as the sunrises over beautiful Laurel Mountain in the morning and come back to dream and sleep in the late evening. All of the new chicks coming to the farm are shipped as day-old chicks so no other poultry is introduced before a health check and isolation. Muddles Farm is currently in the stages of acquiring Black Copper Marans, Salmon Faverolles, and hatching our own Coturnix Quail. We are also working on genetics with several breeds to create an olive-colored egg. Although our customers most favorite color egg, is brown...did you know egg color is determined by the genetics of the hens. The breed of the hen will indicate what color eggs she will produce. For example, Leghorn chickens lay white eggs while Orpington's lay brown eggs and Ameraucana produce blue eggs. But at the end of the day, from a nutrition perspective, all eggs are nutrient-rich and can be part of healthy dietary patterns. And, unless they have been nutritionally enhanced, all eggs have the same essential nutrients— regardless of the shell color of the egg or the way the egg was farmed.
